Cathlete
I have a question for you. I noticed in my other thread that you said you were a brown belt in Tae Kwon Do and 43 years old. When did you start taking Tae Kwon Do and how long did it take you to achieve your brown belt. I am only taking one lesson per week and am wondering just how long it will take to get anywhere. I was hoping I'm not too old to master this well. Regardless...I'm having a blast. Also...can you recommend any good books that show the forms (katas) so I can study more on my own at home. Thanks for you help.

I'd love to know if there are other women in their upper 30's or 40's who have progressed through Tae Kwon Do and any advice they might have.

Hi Briee,

I started with National Karate two years ago. My husband, DD & DS were students and I thought it would be fun to try it. I got hooked big time! The school's emphasis is an "american-ized" Tae Kwon Do. We start out as a white belt and must test in order to earn out next belt. I have advanced twelve belts in two years going to class 2-4 times per week. Each form, which must be mastered in order to advance, is taught in class so no book is available to us. However, all schools are different so I cannot say that is true for your school. As a brown belt, I have to get my brown with black stripe and brown with double black stripe before I can start screening for my black belt. I hope to start screening within the next 6-9 months. In addition to doing forms, basics, & self defense, I must also do pad strikes, weapons (Bo, Kamas..) and spar. Sparring is the hardest workout I've ever had to do x(

There are quite a few men & women around my age at various levels in our school so you are definitely NOT too old. If you are having fun then I say "GO FOR IT" The only thing I need to do more than the younger students is stretch longer and more thoroughly.

Good Luck!

JJ

JJ sounds like your doing great!! Congratulations and thanks for the encouragement. We don't have books either....but I kind of wanted to look ahead and see what's to come as far as forms.
