Hey New Yawkers: Strike?

Do you think there will be a transit strike? People in my office who are coming in by Metronorth will have no problem. People coming from Long Island and New Jersey will have to walk across town, but it's doable. As for me, fagedaboutit. No way I'm going to make it in from Brooklyn. I'll be working from home remotely.

I was supposed to leave the office early tomorrow to have oral surgery, but that won't happen either if there is a strike. I really wanted to get the surgery over with, and need to have it done before the end of the year for insurance purposes. :(

Do you really think it will happen?

I am crossing my fingers this isn't going to happen. I don't know though. Sounds like Metronorth will be affected to some degree from what my DH read. He also found out that if it does happen, his school will start cancelling finals one by one and resume them at the beginning of January. YUCK!

Well, one more hour to go and we'll see. I assume they will take it down to the wire and maybe--if we're lucky--they'll extend the deadline because they're making progress. Keeping my fingers crossed. The subways were crawling tonight. I would have to walk the 3 miles to walk, which would be fine if it was summer, not 30 degrees and sleeting rain and snow, and if I didn't still have bronchitis. Good thing is, though, that we had our office Christmas party tonight and we all get to "work" at home tomorrow.
 
It drove me crazy last night because everything continued to be up in the air past midnight. I kept waking up and turning on the radio. Finally, I just decided to stay home this morning. But at least I'll be able to have my oral surgery this afternoon. I'm really anxious to get it over with.

Hey Nancy, I live up in the Bronx and I got in fine this morning. I'm a little concerned that things will go badly today and I will not be able to get home ok.

I am anxious about it but I do agree with the transit workers on this one. I would hate it from a commuter stand point but I would be much more devistated if I had to work with the conditions they currently have.

I was reading that the last strike in 1980 lasted 11 days, and the one before that lasted 12 days. Ouch!! :eek:
 
Well, if they are only doing a partial strike against some private bus lines today, and they've put off the strike deadline until Tuesday, that sounds to me as if they're making some progress. So that's hopeful at least--I don't think that they really want to strike, considering they're likely to get fined thousands of dollars a day.

Am lucky that I can work at home today, at least.
 
I am so lucky that I am only a 10 minute walk from my office on Wall Street. But one of my coworkers asked if she could stay with me if there was a strike! I barely know her and I don't have a place she could sleep, unless she's willing to sleep on my loveseat... Weird. I thought that was really nervy. I would never ask someone I barely know if I could sleep over!

I have a flight early on Tuesday morning, so I ordered a car service to the airport, which I'm usually too cheap to do. I think I'll take the car even if there's no strike - it will be nice not to have to lug my suitcase onto the subway.
 
Yup, LaG, car service is the way to go.
As far as your co-worker goes, if it't that important that she be there, your company should pay for a hotel room for her.
 
That is definitely convenient! (As is car service--suitcases on the rush hour subway are a real pain.) I will have a 6 mile round-trip walk if there's a strike. I guess that means I'd have to give up my daily 4-5 mile racewalk?? I hate to do that, since I wouldn't be able to walk as fast as I racewalk, and my heart rate wouldn't get up enough...yet I think that suddenly going to 10 miles a day would be too much. ??
 
Well, here we go. How is everyone coping? I can't wait to walk 3+ miles in wind chills in the teens. Whee.
 
Nancy, when I heard about the strike this morning on the news, my first thoughts were of you, "how's Nancy going to get to the work?":)
 
I was just watching the news and they are, ofcourse, interviewing folks in regards to the strike. One reporter is standing on the NY side of the Brooklyn bridge talking to people who just walked over the bridge and one gal just crossed the bridge and has to walk another 135 blocks to get to school in the freezing cold!!! HOLY CRAP! :eek: :eek: :eek: I give you all credit! I bow at your feet!
 
Boy, this is gonna suck big time. I am thankful at least my DH was able to take his last law midterm before this happened. DH said that with the strike they start cancelling exams and that is now happening as of today. UGH. He rides Metronorth so I think so far he is okay. Though I imagine the train might be more jammed as people are trying to find alternate ways to get around. Oh boy. I'm glad we're getting out of town on Friday. Hopefully we'll come home and this will be OVER.
