Hey, endomorphs!

Stacy

Cathlete
I was starting to feel left out!! I unfortunately have no words of wisdom as to what helps our body type! Maybe some fellow endomorphs can shed some light.

I am an endomorph! I think clean eating and circuit type workouts are helpful and always cardiovascular aerobics.
We tend to hold onto our fat so we need to up our metabolism by weight training regularly and seriously. We also need to eat small meals regularly throughout the day to enhance our metabolism.
Here is a page with some information on all 3 bodytypes and exercise and diet tips if you are interested.

Not to crash your party here, but I don't think body typing for exercise goals is very effective for anyone other than real true types. I mean, most people are not one type, they are a mix of a few types, possibly all types. Like me, I think I am a mesomorph, but I doubt I could eat and get buff just as fast as, say, that Serena girl that plays tennis. However, no matter how much I ate and how little I exercised I don't think I could ever look really mushy..like a true endomorph. I have tried to design my program for both and nothing seems to work. The goals seem to be the same for both types. Seems like it is always the same...cardio, weights and stretching. I don't know, it just seems overated to me....

I am a true mesomorph and I see plenty of advantages to having larger denser bone and muscle. For one thing, when I weighed 280lbs I was sure fat, but my waist was 42in which is pretty small for someone almost 300lbs. My doctor is the one who got me to'accentuate the positive' as she put it. She told me I had a great physique if I could just use all that muscle I had and get rid of the fat, (that's were Cathe, Gay Gasper and Christy Taylor came in:) ). Now I find myself adapting really fast to new weight training programs and I simply seem to build muscle very quickly. Believe me, I have the quads and gastroc muscles from stepping to prove it.:)

Now I'm almost at 140 (my goal that I've been triving for ever since I bought Cross Train Express) and I realize that because of my build, I'm pretty heavy so I limit the impact I do. I will usually only do one or two days of impact routines. With Cathe and Christy tapes I will modify most power moves except those that involve a turn or a two foot landing. I also have to do a lot of stretching, which is pretty tricky because if I'm not careful I can over stretch which will open a whole new can of worms, but if I don't stretch enough I will find my leg muscles tightening up during the warm up move where you go into a lounge, and bend your back knee while rolling through the foot.

Best of all, I've been dropping weight on 1600-1800 calories a day, thank goodness because 1200 calories a day just about killed me.:)

Interesting to know, DEEDEE. While I don't believe I am a true mesomorph, my build does lend me to some excessive tightness. I also am heavy for my height. I am 5'0 137 pounds, but look very solid. I don't think I get good muscle gains but I also seem to be very bad at noticing the positive changes in myself. Where I really notice BAD tightness is in my calves and gluteals. Those outer glute stretches are so hard for me that I almost pop my knee everytime. Stepping is probably not too good for that, as well as endless squats and lunges. It is nice that your doctor thought so highly of you. I bet you look great now, huh??

I think Serena Williams is the tennis player I am thinking of..don't even know if that is her name....but man, that is a TRUE mesomorph to me!! I would KILL to look like her!!!!

Hey naughtoj,

I hear you, the Williams sisters are both powerhouses. I used to want to have the long and lean look, but I'm 5'3", so nothing on me is long.:) But As I've gotten into weight training I really do enjoy building muscle. I don't want to get huge, so I always alternate 12weeks of lighter weights more reps (Body Pump) and 12 weeks of heavy weights less reps. I have had trainers come up to me in the gym and offer to train me for body building, they say I could be a champion. I thought about for about oh, 5 whole minutes:). I love to eat and I really don't think I could stick to such a strick diet.

The one draw back is that I love aerobics, but I really do have to modify all of that impact because even as I've lost weight, if I do too much impact, (and too much impact for me is like two days in a row of one of Cathe's step videos without modifications) I will suffer aches and pains in my feet and my knees, so its just better for me to lighten up a bit.

I do get a kick out of flexing my quad and seeing that big 'ole muscle pump up.:) My boyfriend calls me a 'Quadzilla', I take it as a complement.
