Help - I am craving chalk!

Fitnik

Cathlete
I have had no cravings at all throughout my pregnancy but now find myself in the last month seriously craving chalk!!! My mum says this is due to calcium deficiency so I upped my milk intake but am still having to resist the temptation to eat something chalky.

I am struggling to resist eating baby powder which is the perfect consistency to satisfy my craving - am I going mad? I have actually taken to eating paracetamol tablets whenever I get a headache these days for the joy of chewing on something chalky.

HELP!

Fitnik, I am really sorry that you have to experience this. Bad enough to want to eat big plates of pasta or loads of chocolate ... but chalk/baby powder. That, you really shouldn't give in to. I've certainly heard of this, and am pretty sure you are not going mad. Although I can imagine that it may just feel like it! Good luck working through this and feel free to come here for some support. Maybe you should get rid of the baby powder for now. -- Gina

Question: What causes pica (cravings for non-food items during pregnancy)?

The BabyCenter Editors: No one knows for sure. Some pregnant women develop strong cravings for non-food items such as dirt, ashes, clay, chalk, ice, laundry starch, baking soda, soap, toothpaste, paint chips, plaster, wax, hair, coffee grounds, and even cigarette butts. This common phenomenon is called pica (which is Latin for magpie, a bird that will eat almost anything). In some studies, these bizarre cravings have been linked to an iron deficiency — even though none of the craved items contains significant amounts of iron.

If you crave any of these items, that doesn't necessarily mean you have any sort of deficiency, and it definitely doesn't mean you should consume them! In fact, eating non-food substances can actually interfere with nutrient absorption and possibly cause a deficiency. And while eating ice is not likely to be harmful (except possibly to your teeth!), eating dirt or most of the other items mentioned can lead to illness, such as lead poisoning or bowel blockage, or in rare cases, even death.

If you are having any strong cravings for non-food items, it's a good idea to talk to your physician or midwife. While this kind of craving is somewhat common among healthy pregnant women, it's worth getting checked for any underlying physical or psychological problem. And just talking with your practitioner about these feelings may help you deal with them in a healthy way.

Wow, please forgive me for saying this, but that is so bizarre! What I find bizarre is craving something that you more than likely have never eaten before--especially baby powder so how does the body "crave" it? I have not had any real cravings this pregnancy so far (26 weeks)and I hope that I don't start craving things like dirt, etc. I think my husband will put me out to pasture for sure! I hope that your craving for chalk passes soon. Maybe eating some Tums would help--you would get your calcium as well as satisfy that chalky texture craving. Good luck and please don't eat the baby powder!

Now, if only I could keep my paws out of the Halloween candy!!!

Hi Fitnik,

What about substituting your chalk/baby powder craving for sherbert ? Like Sherbert Fountains, and Sherbert Dips ?
I know it is not the same, but it tastes nicer !

Anna :)

Do you have tums and rolaids in the UK? I know they certainly taste like chalk and could maybe get rid of that craving while giving your body some much needed calcium and help if you have heartburn!

Thank you for all the suggestions - I'll try to get chewable vitamin tablets. It's a crazy thing, this pregnancy business!

Having suggested chewing vitamins to curb your chalk craving, it occurred to me that you should be careful not to overdose.

Fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E) are stored in the body, so you shouldn't take too many of these (these wouldn't be chalky anyway - they are oily).

Vitamin C is water soluble, so your body should just pee what it doesn't need. Still, I don't know if there is a maximum during pregnancy, so its worth checking with your doctor to be safe.

"I hope that I don't start craving things like dirt, etc. I think my husband will put me out to pasture for sure!"

But wouldn't that be the perfect place? You could have all the dirt you wanted! (Sorry, I just couldn't resist. Please forgive the bad humor.)
