Hi I have a question??
I am 27 yrs old looking to lose about 20 pounds.
I have a fear and here it is..i have embedded in my brain that if i use weights before i lose the weight it just building muscle over the fat. I understand you have to do cardio also with weight training but i dont know why i just feel to lose about 15 pounds first then start weights.
can someone give me some input
THanks

Obviously, not Cathe here, but please know: Muscle is the calorie-burning machinery in your body. The more muscle you have and the more you work it, the more calories you burn all day.

Hi Karen,

I'm not Cathe, but that fear isn't correct. A lot of women are afraid of this, I hear this concern every time I have a new female client and I hand them a set of dumb bells, so your not alone. I'm not sure how this myth got started, but it simply isn't true. Your muscles right now are under the fat and skin, but your not going to walk around like you can wrestle an alligator if you start lifting weights tomorrow. Building muscle will not make you look fatter, and the fat won't make it look like you got bulky muscles. But if you build lean muscle mass, you will look slimmer even with the fat, and as a bonus, you'll burn more calories even sleeping with the more muscle. Also, since your thinking of going this way, get a cloth tape measure and take your measurements, as there well be weeks where you won't lose an ounce, but will have lost an inch or two. You usually really notice this when your normal jeans fall down, but it can sometimes help, when your in a slump and think what your doing isn't working and see you lost a 1/2 an inch here and there.

Good luck and you found a wonderful forum, with a lot of good info,

Kit

Hi Karen,

I'm not Cathe either, but rather another Karen. Sometimes I feel like a recording about this, I have recommended this book so much -- but if you can get your hands on a copy of the book, READY, SET, GO! by Phil Campbell, he really goes over many of these questions and answers them. I think the two previous posts were good, too.

Have a good one.

:)

Hi Karen1,

I agree with the other posters and just wanted to suggest that you take a look at Cathe's March Rotation (I've pasted the link at the bottom of this message). That month she posted three different rotations: one geared to gaining strength, another toward increasing endurance, and a third for fat loss. You'll notice by comparing these three workouts that there is still a fair amount of weight training in the fat loss rotation, but it is a bit different than the other two rotations. The most notable thing is that she doesn't incorporate the Gym Style workouts in the fat-loss rotation. I'm not suggesting you do this rotation (unless you want to!), but only thought I'd bring it to your attention, as an example of how weight loss and weight training are complementary to one another.

If you want to do this kind of a rotation, but don't have these specific workouts, then I'm sure many of the "educated crowd" in the Open Discussion forum would be happy to help you put one together, based on what you do own.
