Hi Cathe/Ladies,

I need some help. Yesterday i was doing CTX power circuit and by about the end of it i started feeling some minor tension in my lower back actually around my tail bone area. I continued (i was just doing the aerobic part) and when i got done about 30 min. later i could hardly bend over. My tail bone was so tight and sore i had to squat just to pick stuff off the floor. I am still sore today. I only feel the pain when i try to bend over. What did i do!? I do not remember anything poping or doing any move that i though, oh i think i pulled something. I have never had this happen before. So now i am extremely bummed because i will have to sit out from working out for a few days. Well i suppose i could walk. Has any one ever had this happen to them? It is not in the lower back it is more in my tail bone area. :( x( ;( ; ANY ADVICE OR SUGGESTIONS would be much appreciated!!:-( Thanks Gals, Tricia

Oh, I am sorry to hear about your back pain.

I can not offer you any advice, but if it doesn't go away today, I would see a doctor. I guess "rest" is safe advice.

Hi,

If it is actual pain on the coccyx (tailbone) then you have a bigger problem...But, there are things you can do....You will know it is a true tailbone problem when you cannot sit down. If there is pain when you are sitting on your tailbone, you have injured the actual bone usually caused by falling or stress over time.

Most likely you pulled a muscle and it hurts. Remember, the trunk (especially the back) is our power source and every movement must pass through the back and spine. So, you should take it easy. Most importantly - STOP doing the exercise(s) which triggered this problem.

Now, I am a sports psychologist, not an MD...So, this is what I learned in many years of exercise physiology. You should speak with your doctor if it continues to hurt.

Good luck and protect your back.

Tricia, I'm not a doctor but I had this same problem every time I worked out. Here it was my hamstrings. They were so tight that it pulled on my lower back muscles. After I started stretching my hamstrings every day I have not had any more lower back problems. Maybe give it a try, don't force it, just stretch it out a little more and more every day. Maybe thats what the problem is for you.

Hi Tricia,
It could be a muscle spasm rather than a strain or sprain. You may have had tight back and hamstring muscles and it's possible that you didn't get enough stretching in afterward for your body. Either way, I think you should see a Doctor/Chiropractor/Sports physician/Osteopath as soon as you possibly can. I go through this sort of thing a lot because of previous (non exercise related) injuries and I've found that the more I practice yoga, the less this happens to me. I also hold the stretches done at the end of a workout for longer because that's what I need to do for my body. If you don't fancy yoga, there are plenty of good stretching tapes on the market and you might also want to look into something like pilates to help strengthen your core (the stronger your core, the less likely you are to be bothered by back problems.)

Whatever you decide to do, please make sure you get qualified advice and help before resuming your exercise program. You don't want to make things any worse.

Hope you feel better soon!

- Lisa :)

Hi Ladies!

Thanks all for your words of wisdom!!:D Here i am 2 days later and feeling much better. Around my tailbone is feeling just alittle tender but no more pain. I can actually bend over. Its funny though that you mention the hamstrings because i do remember Friday when i was getting out all the workout stuff i would need, when i went to pick up my step i did feel some tightness in my upper hamstrings. Like around where my butt and hams meet. I just dismissed it as i needed to warm up. It did not feel painfull i just remember thinking, ew my hamstrings are alittle tight. So i wonder if i bent over to fast putting some weird type of stress on them.? This has never happend to me before and like i said i didn't feel any pain working out & it was about 30min after that i was like, What in the world did i do.! I am going to try to workout Monday (Upper body/walking) that should be safe and then maybe try Leaner legs on wend. I am also going to order some ball core tapes from college video. I think your right the more core strength i have the better off i will be!! Thanks again gals:7 :+ Tricia
