heavy weights makes bigger legs?

Cathe....I have a question for you. First of all, since starting your workouts on Fittv, I don't want to do anyone else's!!! Now I'm buying all of your DVD's. Also, I hope you are recovering from your injury. I can only imagine how frustrated you must be. Now, to my question. I am about to buy a weighted barbell for your workouts, but my concern is that if I do squats with heavy weights, my legs will bulk up. I have a tendency toward muscular, big legs anyway, as compared to my petite upper body. I am very concerned that using heavy weights is a mistake for me. I want to lean down a bit....I'm at a good weight, but would like to lose five pounds or so and lean down, which is kind of difficult anyway for a 46 (47 in a week) year old woman. Any input would be greatly appreciated!!! I'm about to order a good percentage of your DVD's so I have them in my library....and then maybe I can sell all of my Firm, Janis Saffell tapes and TAe Bo to someone who might want them! Thank you so much, and be well...by the way, I live in NJ too, but unfortunately in Bergen County, or else I would be at your gym!!! Janet

Hi Janet! Usually to train the legs with very heavy weight you would need a spotter to help you put the barbell up in place. For this reason, I don't consider any of my legs tapes true heavy weight training. Some are heavier and train with slower reps than others, but still not to where I would say you are near max weight. Therefore I think you are safe using any of my leg tapes.

I, too, have a tendancy to bulk in my upper thighs and I find that training heavier once every so often helps strengthen and define my muscles without bulking. I like to do about three moderate or light leg workouts for every one heavy one. I usually work legs exclusively one times per week (unless I do it as a split)since so many of my other workouts or activities involve legs.

A couple of my heavier weight DVDs for legs are Slow and Heavy Legs and Pyramid Lower Body.

A few of medium weight leg DVDs are Gym Style Legs, Pure Strength Legs, Leaner Legs, and Legs and Glutes

A couple of my lighter weight leg DVDs are part of my total body endurance workouts such as Muscle Max, Muscle Endurance, and Power Hour.

Any of my circuit workouts that include leg work will always work legs in a light to medium fashion.

I think using any of the workouts above, one to two times a week, in addition to your other cardio and strength activities (and of course a clean eating plan) will bring you the results you are looking for.

Good Luck!

Cathe, thank you so much for responding so quickly. You are the best...I simply love your workouts. I plan on purchasing all of the dvd's that you mentioned. Thanks for taking the time to get back to me, and I hope you are well on your way to a full recovery. I am really looking forward to purchasing your new dvd's once they are released. Janet
