Heavier with Gym Styles/Pure Strength/Slow and Heavy?

Cathlete
good morning knowledgable catheites.

i am looking to get some more split workouts later in the month. i would like only upper body really b/c i have plenty of lower body workouts anyway.

i amd debating gym styles but not sure if this is a heavy split workout, but i love using the band :D. i have slow and heavy from fittv and know what i could do with that but i am not to crazy about it and it might be awhile before we see the 3-day split to presale so what do you think is pretty for heavy upper body split training? should i go for the two gym style workouts or the pure strength? i will probably eventually bite the bullet at get slow and heavy at some point anyway.

thanks in advanced

Hi Kassia

I love the Gym Styles and go as heavy as I can with those. I have seen great results with these workouts.

I also have slow and heavy and have had them for about 12 months now. I have only used them once though (hangs head in shames). I decided to get the gym style series around the same time so I never really got around to using slow and heavy to its full potential. I must try them again soon.

I cannot comment on pure strength as I don't have that series. But love the gym style series.

Kim:)

I'd go for the Gym Styles, especially if you like band work. They also have timesaver premixes on the GS dvds which include the band work plus one less set for most exercises. I've found another great split is the upper body workouts on Barry's Bootcamp. There's a leg and full body workout in the set but you can get the entire set of 5 dvds pretty cheap so it's a great investment in my opinion.

Another vote for Gym Styles. I go as heavy as I can on them and have seen the results. I also LOVE the band work. My shoulders really burn after this one. I have Slow and Heavy but I don't use them very often. Slow and Heavy moves..well..at a slower pace and I find I need more concentration and focus. I don't have Pure Strength so I can't comment on it.

Kassia,

Another vote for Gym Styles for you. I bought Slow & Heavy many moons ago and I've only used it once. I used Gym Styles & Pure Strength a lot when I got them.

This week I decided to use Slow and Heavy and I have to say I love it!!! Why did I leave it for so long? Maybe because I thought it would be boring because it was slow reps, I also was not keen on the leg exercise where they use a heavy dumbbell for plie squats. The bicep work is tough tough tough on a par with PUB, the back and chest is great too and they use dumbbells only. I am doing the leg and shoulders tomorrow. I will continue with this series for 2-3 weeks to see how I look. I can't believe I didn't touch this for 4 years.

I just received GS and S&H yesterday. I started FitnessFreak's Muscle rotation last night (S&H chest, PH chest, Coremax #1, stretch). Wow. I LOVE Slow and Heavy! That was probably the best workout I have ever done! I have never worked like that before, I have only done muscle endurance. I couldn't believe that I lasted the whole time. And then going to Power Hour was just great (I felt like my arms were floating!):)

I am just so excited to see what this kind of training does to my body.

I can't wait to try GS as well because I really love Cathe's band work from Muscle Max (except on the leg presses...I have to stop at, like, 2!)

oh cool i was secrectly wishing gym styles was more of a heavy weight workout LOL. i don't really use the slow heavy fittv ones i have so i don't see me grabbing for it often but it is a nice workout to have i guess. just can't do the super slow pace.

btw where can i find barry's bootcamp. i have heard big talk about it over at VF but never any links to the good places to buy

ETA:eek:kay i found the website. got some answers thanks!!!

THANKS ALL,

i will have to wait but i think i will eventually get the gym styles. i NEED split workouts LOL>!!!

RE: Heavier with Gym Styles/Pure Strength/Slow and Heav...

I love all three of these series. I have to say that S&H is what really made me see changes in my arms, finally. But... I've had them for years. GymStyles are great too. I just think S&H will give you better results. The slowness makes them tougher.

Cathe doesn't go as heavy in Pure Strength, but I do. I love doing this one, and heavying up.

The great thing about all of these is that you can choose the weight that works best for you!!

RE: Heavier with Gym Styles/Pure Strength/Slow and Heav...

I have S&H and have only used it twice. It's pure torture for me---soooooo boring--I just don't have the patience. It's a fabulous workout, I am just wayyyyy to ancy for a workout like that. PUB/PLB is much more up my ally.
I am dying for the GS series (just not in the budget right now..... :-() That will definetely be my next purchase.

RE: Heavier with Gym Styles/Pure Strength/Slow and Heav...

You can definitely go heavy on Gym Styles, especially if you put longer breaks between sets (and definitely between body parts), which will allow more recovery. That's the way I do the workout, and I am able to go pretty heavy.

GS is better than PS, I reckon. In many ways, GS is an update of the PS series. On GS, you can go heavy. The music is good on the upper body workouts, though I don't think much of the music on GS legs. GS legs includes extensive and effective floorwork, much more interesting and varied oves than the PS floorwork. As I said, an update. The bandwork on GS may or may not appeal to you, but it is a challenge of a different sort for the muscles. The rep counts on GS are also very varied so it seems that you hit the muscle in more and different ways with the GS series.

Like others here, it is really only S&H that makes a real difference in my body and strength. With longer rotations of S&H, I can triple my weight loads and see fabulous definition. I can't do this with PUB, PH or ME. After S&H rotations, I can switch to GS for a few weeks and maintain strength, but even GS can't growm me the muscle that S&H does.

I am looking forward to seeing what Amy Bento's Slow Mo challenge can do for me!

i just might go with gym styles first and take kathryn's advice about resting a little longer. the slow and heavy off fittv gives me that option with commericals(or i march in place) so i am in no rush for that. i think between gyms styles, amy's slo-mo and her 3 days split premix on APX i might have enough to get me through a couple of rotations and after the holidays i can see if i still want to give some other ones a shot.

thanks for your help ladies!!!

I have Slow&Heavy and hardly ever use them b/c I also get bored. Last time I did the series I did everything at a 4-4 count instead of a 2-6 count and that made it alot less boring for me.

Another vote for Gym Styles. I've actually been using the mix-n-match on this one and find I can go heavier because I do a push/pull type of thing. I also don't always do as many reps as Cathe. I usually like to do 8-10 reps. If I wind up going to 12 reps, I usually add weight. I've also used a pyramid down system where I start with 12 reps for the 1st set, then 10, then 8. This has been working much better for me than doing the workout as is. I've been doing Cathe's April '05 rotation with just the Gym Styles and am getting great results. There are some exercises where Cathe just does 8 reps like the slow bicep curls with the barbell but usually she does 12 reps. If you like band work, then I would definitely get this series.
