Heart rate of 105 this morning.

Good morning everyone,

This morning, while lying down in bed, my heart rate was 63 beats per minute. From what I can gather this is quite normal. However, on getting up and walking to the bathroom my heart rate shot up to 105! I'm 19 years old and thought I was healthy. Does this suggest otherwise? :-(

I wouldn't worry about it. That sounds really normal to me, actually. My RHR (resting heart rate) is 53, when I drive it is 75 and I am just sitting and turning a wheel and when I do the dishes it is about 110-120 and I am just standing there.

Sometimes you have days where you could run for hours and your heart rate could never get above 140, and somedays you could walk down the road and your heart rate could jump to 150. A lot of it depends on what time of the month it is, what your blood pressure is, what you have eaten or if you haven't eaten, etc... but having 105 just walking to the bathroom is fine. Don't fret! :)

I think this is pretty normal. Mine does this too - I am 70-75 bpm just sitting in a chair working on my computer. When I get up to go the the bathroom, it shoots up to 110. When I sit back down, it goes back down to 70-75. Walking to the bathroom requires your heart to pump a little more blood to get your muscles moving. It's nothing to be concerned about. :)

Hi Eva,

Please try not to worry!! Your heart rate is just fine, and it is normal for it to elevate once you begin moving around. Taking your pulse immediately upon awakening is a great indication of the amount of work your body (more specifically, your heart) needs to exert to support your bodily functions at rest. If you use a heart rate monitor during your training, this is the best time to determine your RHR. As you being to exercise more regularly, your resting heart rate will decrease. This is because your heart will be able to pump blood through the body more efficiently, with less pumps.

If anyone is interested in heart rate training information, please let me know. I have an information sheet that I give to my clients. I am a Spinning instructor, and we incorporate alot of heart rate training into our practice. I agree that it is difficult to use your heart rate monitor for other activities and can even become a hinderance based upon format. However, for running and cycling, they are great tools.

Edited to add link to heart rate training information:
I just posted the article that I wrote on heart rate training for my spinning members at the gym. Let me know if you have questions...
