Heart Rate Monitor

Hello All!

I am considering purchasing a heart rate monitor. I am interested in making sure I reach my target heart rate (not going over and not staying too low) and I am interested in finding out how many calories I am burning when I am working out or simply throughout the day. Do you recommend the HRM? Would using perceived rate of exertion be fine- like Cathe uses in her dvds? Should there be other things I should target besides HR and calories? Do you have a recommendation on one to purchase? I just want to get it right!

Thanks in advance for your advice and consideration!

Hi Kim...HRM's have come a long way over the years. I think we all use them for different reasons. But I think knowing what your HR is in any specific workout is a good idea. I have used a few different ones in the last 15 years. Right now my favorite is a Garmin as it tracks so many things for a runner, including mileage, cals, pace, plus alot more. Most people don't need this kind of HRM/GPS unit if they don't run or bike alot. HR and calories would be a good thing to track. Polar makes some great HRM's and maybe some others will chime in. I have found the best prices and info about HRM's thru this site : http://www.heartratemonitorsusa.com/ I hope this helps...:)

I have a Polar F6 and love it! It works consistently and reliably. It tracks my HR and the calories I burned, plus it keeps the daily, weekly and monthly files. It also has the capability to download to my computer if I want, but that's not something that's important to me.

Thanks Amy. I will definitely look into that model- sounds like what I was looking for minus the ability to download to computer. Thanks again!
