Healthy Eating Advice Please

Many of you know, I have been fighting those last 10 lbs. I have tried very hard. I love WW's, but I make it 10 days, and after that, my stomach is just hungry, hungry, hungry. I make it 3 days, and then I lose it. I give up. I eat high-fiber, healthy foods. So, so many of you swear by food diaries, I thought maybe I would give that a try. I have muscle, but I also have the layer of fat covering it. But, my point is you can look at me and tell I work out. Do you think I am too active to succeed at WW's??? I mean according to my weight at WW's, I am not getting enough food to feed my muscle??? I thought I would try to food journal and stay between 1800-2000 calories and see if that works. What do you think??? Thanks!!!!
Lori

I say try it! I can only speak for me, but when I was trying to keep my calorie intake down to 1400-1600 cal/day to lose weight, although I did lose, my workouts weren't as intense as they are now, plus, I wasn't able to lift as heavy, thus not gaining the definition I desired. When I decided to increase my caloric intake by allowing my body to dictate the calorie needs, I was able to do much longer, intense cardio workouts, lift heavier and gain muscle definition, and still lose weight consistently. I actually average anywhere from 1800-2200 cal/day. I keep a journal, don't want to completely trust my body yet without keeping tabs on the numbers :), but I find this method is working pretty well for me.

I wouldnt change anything in your current routine until you give the food diary a week or two. At that point you can look back and see if you truly are doing as well as you think you are. Having to record a handful of this and a handful of that really makes you sit and take notice! I dont measure my food, I just eyeball the quantities and since I for the most part make smart food choices I dont get bogged down in recording calories, fat grams etc religiously. I'd also recommend A. Scott Connelly's book Body Rx. It has some useful information that you can pick and choose from to suit your needs. As far as a food journal I use the journal called Thin for Life that supplements the book by the same name. I havent read that book so I cant comment on it, I just like the lay out of the journal. I believe you can view sample pages on amazon.com. Keep us posted on your progress!! I too am trying to lose the last 5-10lbs and those are the toughest!! Ive been stuck at my current weight for at least a month now!!

Lori,
I do the Body For Life program. I don't know exactly how WW works. But let me ask you this? Are you eating 5 to 6 times a day? If not, you should be. That helped me break through my plateau. Are you using protein drinks? If not, you may want to try this as well.

Hey Lori - If you are eating a high fiber and healthy diet and exercising on a regular basis, you should be really proud of yourself. I think its the only way to lose weight and keep it off. I know its very frustrating when the scale refuses to budge but for some reason some people lose tonnes in as little as 4 months while for the rest of us it takes much longer. I totally feel like throwing something at women who say they lost 7lbs by simply switching to low fat milk - I have work my butt off and really watch what I eat to just lose 2lbs! My husband used to say (just to keep my spirit up, I guess) that the longer it takes for the weight to come off, the longer it will stay off.

I thought I would add that WW did not work for me either. It is a good plan but I was eating more than my assigned pts plus activity pts quite often and that made me feel terrible. I was also trying to eat stuff low on points (like bread) rather than sensibly balancing it out with protein etc. Finally I thought success was far too related to the scale. I have dropped from a size 12 to a 4 but to date the scale has never really reflected much of a weight loss for me.

I would try a food journal. I find it really useful - not so much to count calories (I pretty much eat how much I want to) but to make sure I get adequate protein and keep my fat intake low. I would also recommend a book called Revolutionary Weight Control by Dr Bob Arnot. It is a super sensible way of eating healthy and being full of energy throughout the day. I can vouch for the fact that by following his advice you will never feel hungry. Hang in there - it sounds like you are doing a great job!

Thanks everyone for your replies. Everyone here is so helpful, that is why I love this board. I have done BodyForLife, and I completed one challenge. I still drink the MyoLite shakes. I had one today after my workout today actually. I think if I just listen to my body like everyone on this board says, I will be alot better off. I get so worked up if I go over my points, or do not do perfect. Then I think I have blown it, and everything goes right to you know where. Donna, I am glad that you told me you eat anywhere from 1800-2200. I will remember that if I am having a really hungry day and I want to eat more. Somedays you are just more hungry than other days. I have to learn these things!!!! I have read every book, I love to read, I am a magazine fanatic. I know alot about diet and exercise. But, you sometimes you are so smart, you are dumb at things?? This is how I can be with this, I think I have to be perfect at all times. I have to listen to everyone's advice and listen to my body!!!! I have a feeling these last 10 will go, thanks everyone.

Donna- I also have to tell you that sometimes I am so weak and tired, my workouts really suffer. You are a big inspiration to me, I will let all of you know how I am doing. I think it will be better.

I found a good little "snack" item at Whole Foods. It's Kashi Cocoa Pillows cereal. I don't know if anyone here has seen it but I bought a box and ate a cup of it with strawberries. It was very tasty and just "chocolate" enough (although not overly sweet at all) to get me at least over a chocolate craving if I were to have one. You guys may want to take a look at it. Very healthy product.

K60- I just went to my health food store today. I wish i would of seen that earlier, I would have bought them. They might have that at my regular store, I will check on Thurs.

I bought a couple of books from Amazon.com a minute ago. I got: Healthy Cooking with Rosie Daily and Andrew Weil, Thin For Life, the food journal book to go with it, and The Body Business Plan. I love to read stuff like this. I will get Bob Arnot's book too, just a little later. Thanks for all the suggestions.
