Have you ever tried belly dancing?

What was your experience? Did you use a DVD or take a class?

I was surfing the TV channels a couple of days ago and stopped to watch a show called "Shimmy" on FitTV and thought, "Wow, I sure wish I could do that." The best part was that there were all shapes/heights/curvy ladies with flesh that wiggled and jiggled, and for once, thankfully, not one set of six-pack abs in sight!

I do! When I lived in Salt Lake City I belonged to a troupe, we would do festivals and stuff. It was fun and good exercise!:)

Yes, my girl friend and I took a class and had a blast. The instuctor had an amazing body and made it look so easy. It was hard to concentrate on the arm movements and body movements at the same time let alone move the feet. I even bought some dvd's but just did not follow through with doing it so plan to sell them on ebay to make room for STS.

I own some of the bellydance workouts, but they aren't as fun as taking an actual class with other gals (and some guys) too. I even learned to play the finger cymbals--the zills. (sp?) I have all the costumes and stuff, it was so much fun. But we moved and I have not looked into joining another troupe in Vegas, but might have to know that you brought it up!:7
I love it because your belly can be out of shape, or in shape, women of all shapes and sizes bellydance and everyone is accepted regardless of how you look, its actually quite empowering.

How do you make your hips do what they do on TV? Is it hard to get your hips to do that? And on today's episode they were moving so fast!

It's not as hard as it looks... just don't try it in front of the mirror with your sweats on lol!
The moves are enhanced to look the way they do with the coined or beaded BELT. That's really the only way you can see the "shimmying".
I danced for a while and most of the girls I ever danced with were heavier :)
You can do it on a professional level and perfoem at clubs and restaurants as well as events, weddings etc
I liked it
If you want to try any of the videos I recommend Neena & Veena, some of the videos on the market can be pretty lame.
