have to read this [shocking]

Okay, I have to respond. Actually, YES! I know several pitbulls that are not violent. I know several who are heroes and have saved many, many lives. If you want the facts, please see www.forpitssake.org. As long as a Pit Bull is well socialized (ANY dog needs to be well socialized actually) and NEUTERED it will attack no more than any other dog.

I don't think any six week old puppy is going to be violent. It may be playful, but even if it was gnawing because it was playing it would take along time to chew through toes even on a baby. This is one of the most bizarre stories I have ever heard of. Those parents don't deserve to have a kid or a dog.

My pit bull isn't violent, and she is half doberman - another "bully" breed. She is the most obedient, eager to please, trainable dog we have had. She gets along great with all the dogs at the park, too, as well as with our other dog, who is also female. :) Loves our kids. here are some links that you may want to check out:

http://www.realpitbull.com/ http://www.understand-a-bull.com/BSL/OtherBreedBites/AllDogsBite.htm

try this out, you would be surprised how often pit bull attacks aren't even pit bulls because they can't identify what breed it really is: http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petbull/findpit.html

and this is a video that I LOVE about how loving the breed is and who exactly brings pits into their family (Helen Kellar, one of our presidents, the Rascals a kid's show!), but BEWARE!!! There are some very graphic pictures from dog attacks http://youtube.com/watch?v=mYGlM-afPEM

Rachel Ray also has a red nosed-pit bull, Isaboo. In temperament testing, pit bulls scored above the all american family dog, the golden retriever. In fact, all the across the United States the five dogs that bit the most in recent years are: German Shepards, Golden Retrievers, Cocker Spaniels, Rottweilers and Chow Chows. If you take into cosideration the number of each breed and the total bites caused by the breed pit bull ranks number 4... from the bottom. If you want I can find the articles that had the stats, I haven't seen them since last summer when we got our Lucy. :)

ETA that when I was running with Lucy a couple of weeks ago, a lab mix ran out and tried to attack us. I don't really think that it is the pit, but the lack of a responsible owner. Dogs are pack animals and they need a responsible leader or they will be destructive and potentionally violent. My friend has a pack of 4 yorkies that live across the street from her that try to attack anyone who walks past their yard and has bitten some kids. Yorkies! Little 10 pound dogs! But I will admit that when I pit bites, it counts because of their build and tenacity. But please keep in mind that 98% of all pit bulls will never harm a human being in their life.

Pit bulls have a bad rap because of unscrupulous breeders and irresponsible (and stupid) owners.

My friend owns a pit bull who is as sweet as the day is long.

I also know a few pitty's who are very sweet dogs. It's all in how they're raised. As a note - 6 weeks is too young for a puppy to be removed from it's mother. One of the things a pup learns from the mother at that critical age is bite control, as in, when is play biting/chewing too hard.

I feel absolutely horrible for this baby. It's the parents' fault for what happened. I know in the news story the parents claim they were sleeping. My bet is that they weren't even in the apartment. :-(

Well, if these parents REALLY cared about what happened to their child, I would suspect that they were passed out from drinking. How else would you sleep through that? They also must have been underprivilaged if they were sleeping on a mattress and the child was sleeping in a car seat the whole night.
The child will be better off with someone else. If you can't keep an eye on them when they are infants then you dont have a prayer when they get older.
