Has anyone tried NuvaRing contraceptive?

Hi everyone,

Sorry to broach such a personal subject, but I figured this is the largest place I know to "poll" women. I am supposed to start this new birth control this evening, but one of the side effects says "weight gain". My doctor knows I'm terrified of this, and he says that since I work out I don't have to worry about this. I have used other pills, ortho tri-cyclen and ortho tri-cyclen lo in the past without weight issues. I had wicked mood swings and break through bleeding though. Has anyone tried this birth control and did you like it? Did you have any weight gain problems with it? Thanks for any input.

I haven't tried that one, but I will tell you my OB/GYN said the weight gain blamed on birth control pills and related devices is usually not as intense as people claim. She has had me on Microgestin for over two years now, and it was during those two years I LOST 60 pounds! She also told me the same thing your doc said - with the way I workout, it shouldn't be a concern. So, I would go ahead and give it a try! It sounds like you don't have weight issues with the other pills, so hopefully you won't with this either. I hope it helps with the bleeding and mood swings. Best of luck to you!!

Thanks carol for the encouragement. I love your quote, because sometimes we need all the help we can get in the "not shooting our husbands" department.

I have been using Nuvaring for 5 months now and I wish it had been marketed 7 years ago, because it has turned my life around. I can't praise it enough. It is helping with my terrible PMDD and mood swings fabulously, my boobs are slightly larger, a bonus, and my skin is fabulous too, no more breakouts at all. It's simple to use, you only have to think about it once per month, your partner cannot feel it, it does not fall out and no, no weight gain at all. I am a poster child for the effectiveness of this hormonal treatment. I use it predominantly to help with the mood disorders (i.e., like Seasonale, I use three or four in a row and then take a one week break: I hate the one week breaks, I feel so grotty and energy-less during them) because it releases a steady amount of hormones throughout the month, unlike BC pills for the most part. For me, it is perfect. Negligible break-through bleeding. The contraceptive benefits are just a bonus side issue for me!!!!

My husband also like it (leaving you to interpret that one!?!?!?!)

Vickie: what do you lose through trying it?

Clare;-)

Clare,

Thank you so much for your experience. I think I will give it a try. I figure, I know how to insert a tampon, it should be about the same. I am a bit leary of weight gain, but considering the fact that I've used oral contraception for 14 years without a problem. I'm not sure why I consider it. Thanks again for your positive experience.

Vickie, I have used Nuvaring for about a year. No side effects at all. I had gained weight but it was due to my diet and after becoming a vegetarian in the last 4 months I lost 21 lbs and am back to a weight I hadn't been since High School!! So I don't think Nuvaring will make you gain weight as Carol is fit already has said. I wasn't as lucky as Clare though....:)...still a 34A!...give it a try and we are here to help...:)...Carole

Clare...you are too funny....and you know what....I'd probably fit much better in a 34AA!!!.......:7 ....Carole
