Has anyone installed fencing recently?

I have to fence in my backyard at my new house for my King, Maximus. I did half--only HALF--of the yard at my current house, it was about 120 feet of 6 ft stockade, & it cost me $2K.

Now, my new place has a tiny yard (probably about 20X30) so I was thinking I'll go 4 ft (had to do 6 ft at the current place b/c it's much more urban) & maybe get something a little more decorative. Of course b/c I also have to install a gate (darn those things are expensive!) we're looking at probably another $3-400.

So, I was thinking either the aluminum white picket, which I think is the most expensive, or the wood w/the cross-hatching along the top. I'm a little nervous about the white picket b/c I don't want my pug to be dog-napped. He is a pedigreed & I'm afraid if people can see him from the street they might just run up the driveway, snatch him & go.

Taking price out of the equation, help me make a decision. See-thru white picket or wood?

I say if you are worried about dog napping then go with the wood. You'll feel better and won't be worried all the time.

Hmmm...I'm always worried about dog-nappers, particularly with purebreds. I think I'd go for a decorative privacy type of fence.

Have you looked into any of the plastic (not sure of the name)fencing that Lowes & Home Depot carries? They have white picket fencing with no space in between, so you would have complete privacy and the convenience of never having to repaint etc. My DH and I often dream about putting that type of fencing around our back yard. It would be astronomical though since we have an acre to cover back there. :(

Well, I would avoid wood because it needs constant upkeep (painting, etc.). You should poke around the home improvement stores and see what they have available in a vinyl because there's loads of options.

I just fenced my yard this year, but I went with the 6-foot vinyl since it was going around the pool area. Looks nice but cost a bloody freaking fortune!!

Good luck!

we've had a polyvinyl (plastic) privacy fence for 11 years now.... and it's still gorgeous! (country estates/nebraska plastics)

it was spendy back then ($20K) but soooo worth it in looks!

every once in a while we get people coming to our door to ask about it!

We have a Great Dane and we had an underground electric fence installed for her. We are very happy with it. It was $2000 to do 2 acres, so a little pricey, but definetly worth it. She learned right away not to "cross the line". It's so nice to not have views obstructed with a fence or to have to weedwhip/mow alongside it.

the problem with invisible fences... they don't protect your dog from other dogs that don't have on the collar, thus not afraid to cross the line... or thieves.....

Yeah the vinyl fencing, duh, I don't know why I was thinking aluminum. And yes, I was considering it b/c it'd last forever. I don't paint my wood fences (I like the more rustic look of the weathered wood), but they only last 20 years tops, depending on the type of wood.

Well, I guess the estimates on Tuesday will likely make the decision for me anwyay. ;-) Thanks for your input!
