Has anyone here had Endoscopic Sinus Surgery?

Hi,

After a year of not breathing well - especially at night - I finally went to an ENT and had a CT scan done. It turns out I need functional endoscopic sinus surgery, a septoplasty for my deviated septum, and a turbinectomy because all the little bones and what not are crushed. Apparently, the septum slowly moved outof place of time, tilted sideways, and is now partially closing the one airway and pulled the opposite side almost closed.

So has anyone had this done and if so - how did it go? Did you se an improvement?

I am getting it done at the end of December (or beginning of January) and I will be laid up for a bit - no working out! BOO!!! And just when STS might come out too :(

Hi Becky:

sorry for your news! I have been dealing with sinus/non allergic allergies myself since moving to the desert and with the dryness and was hooked on nose spray for several years before going to an allergist and getting meds!

Check with SirenSongWoman :) I am not sure exactly what the name of the procedure she had done but she had nasal surgery for a deviated septum just a short time ago :) I'm sure whe will see this as the title of your post is eyecatching :)

Good luck and let us know how things progress! I would be bummed about the timing with STS as well, but if you can breathe better doing STS after the procedure then you will be that much ahead of the game when you do start! I'm sure we will all be huffin and puffin a great deal!

Yes!

I had sinus surgery eight years ago and it's one of the best things I've ever done! I had constant sinus infections and finally went to an ENT for a CT scan. It revealed a deviated septum (more than likely caused from fracturing my nose in a skiing accident almost 10 years prior), and a gel-like clot that had formulated in the sinus cavity behind my cheek, from being constantly congested. Sorry, I don't remember the technical names as you have mentioned!

I won't lie- it was painful for the first day (I stayed over night in the hospital one night, although it was considered "out patient" since I wasn't there a full 24 hours), then uncomfortable for a good week because of the packing and inside splint. I *think* however, that some doctors no longer do the packing? It's been a while now, so I don't remember the specifics, but I know I had strict instructions to keep the sinuses very moist for the first few months, so it seemed like I was constantly using a saline mist spray.

I really am so, so happy with my results. I was just thinking about this today, as I'm fighting a pretty bad cold, but it seems to be draining well and I'm already feeling better. Prior to surgery, one cold would drag on and *always* turn into an infection. It's funny, I didn't realize just how bad I felt all the time- fatigue, not being able to breathe deeply (especially when exercising), and the slightest, but constant pressure (where the cyst turned out to be)- until the surgery was over and I realized what normal felt like. I think I've had two(?) minor sinus infections since my surgery, but both were in conjunction with ear infections, so my whole head was an inflamed mess, LOL.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

The surgery I just had a month or so ago was for a deviated septum only. I had the surgery on Friday and all the "packing" was removed the following Monday. I was uncomfortable but not in any real pain. My doctor said I could, feasibly, be back at work in 3 or 4 days (I don't recommend that) but I was off 8 days. I had one additional follow-up appointment where he cleaned me out again and that was it. Ever since, I've done a saline rinse of my sinuses once or twice per day, which I actually look forward to so I can get... stuff out of there. Since I'm really still healing (and things are still kind of crusty, sorry to be blunt) I really can't be sure how much the surgery has helped just yet but I can tell you I am definitely breathing better in my sleep. What has kind of annoyed me is that I was hoping I would finally be able to breathe in and out without opening my mouth while doing Cardio Coach on the treadmill. No such luck. Maybe when everything's completely healed but not yet. I kept trying but I'm worried I may never be able to because my nose is just too small and I'll always be fighting allergies... Still, it's wonderful not being chronically exhausted during my waking hours because I couldn't get any rest during my sleeping hours. Yea, that's what started the whole thing... being tired all the time. It was worth it.

Besides, I once had mandibular advancement surgery (jaw surgery to correct a BAD overbite) and everything's cake compared to that.

My best friend had this done a couple of months ago. She's had pretty much a non-stop sinus infection for the last year!! She also had her deviated septum fixed when she had the surgery. She said that the first week of recovery was NOT fun, but once they were able to remove the packing she felt a lot better. I talked to her y'day and she was so happy that this is the first fall where she hasn't dealt w/ sinus infections!! She's really glad that she had it done. HTH! I can ask her some questions if you have any more. Just let me know!

Thanks everyone!

Hello,

Thanks everyone for your help. I feel a lot better about getting the surgery done. I am looking forward to being able to breathe and to an overall improvement in my health. I will keep you posted on how it goes. I have it scheduled 12/29/08. I can take that week off from work to recuperate.
