Has anyone ever had their dog vomit blood?

I am freaking out. Came home today and found blood spots all over the house. I have 2 dogs so I'm not sure which one it is. They are both acting fine and eating like normal. I just had their teeth cleaned this week (I'm sure is not related). I am just nervous with this being a holiday weekend. Anyone have any suggestions or similar experiences?

how do you know it is from vomit? are you sure one of their paws isn't beelding or they have a urinary tract infection.....mine have never done this. i would check them out and see if there are any scrapes or cuts and i would page your vet......going strait to the emergency can be very $$$ and your vet may be able to advise you over the phone. good luck and let us know what happens;)

Hi Ari!

Are you sure it is vomit with blood or just spots of blood? (meaning is the dog bleeding from somewhere-like a torn toenail, an ear, etc.) Is it a small amount of blood or a lot? Sometimes when dogs vomit, they can actually rupture a small blood vessel in the stomach and vomit small amounts of blood. In this case, the blood may not be that important. If it is lots of blood, it could indicate possibly an ulcer or a condition called HGE (hemorrhagic gastroenteritis). In these cases, the dog is usually not feeling well, so you could tell which one it is. If the dogs are feeling fine now, I would try to watch them this evening to see which one it might be. Then I would recommend a veterinary visit or at least a call in the morning! Hope that helps!

My dog Lola had this It was horrifying even for me a nurse. She was having bloody diarrhea & it just seemed like so much & bright red? Hopefully this is not it.

I suspect the blood spots are vomit because I found some with grass in it. There are several spots that are pure red. The largest blood spot is bigger than a grapefruit. I guess I will just watch them and try to contact my vet if they keep it up.

Me either. Unfortunately, dogs can't talk & tell you whats wrong.

Get to the vet right away. One of my cats did this, and I found out he had swallowed a metallic christmas ribbon. The doctor had to cut it out (it was 3' long! A friend who gave me the gift wrapped in the ribbon blames her mother, who gave her the ribbon. I blame me, because I had been playing with him with the ribbon, and never imagined he'd find it himself and swallow it!)

My vet said that when animals swallow some things like this, it can ball up and not be able to be passed through the system, so it stays in one place and irritates that place, and can literally shred the intestines to a point where they are irreparable.

Don't mean to scare you unnecessarily, but to emphasize the importance of gettin to the vet right away. It may be nothing serious (let's hope not), but it may be something that is time sensitive to deal with.

Let us know what happens.

Mako was still vomiting blood this morning so I took him to the vet. He did blood work and gave me antibiotics. He said if it keeps up I will need to have x-rays & maybe have him scoped to see if it is an ulcer. I appreciate the feedback. It breaks my heart when our little friends are hurting, but can't tell us what's wrong.

Ari,

I'm so sorry! Hopefully the meds will clear everything up just fine. Like Marla said, it's so hard when our furry ones can't tell us what hurts. I completely understand your feelings of helplessness, and I think Mako knows you're doing everything you can for him. Give him a snuggle from us here.

Hugs and good thoughts coming your way!

I'm sorry to hear about Mako, hopefully it isn't serious and the antibiotics will help. Keep us posted.
