Has anyone been to Yellowstone?

Have any of you been to the Park and if so where would you recommend staying? We are driving there from San Diego and would like to go the most scenic route. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for the advice,
Nicole

My husband, two sons, and I went there in 1996. Nine months in advance my husband made reservations at the various lodges we stayed at right in the park. I guess you could get this information from the National Park Service. I don't know if you have enough advance time to do this, but we loved it. We stayed at three different places in the park and enjoyed the restaurants too. The lodge at Old Faithful was really splendid. Even if you want to go camping, you have to reserve campsites in advance.

I was there, but it was a loooong time ago. My sister and I camped. Sorry that's no help, but enjoy your trip. I thought it was one of the most amazing places I had ever been.

Go to the National Parks website and download all the info you need from there. I went about 5 years ago. You have to be up early to secure new camp sites each day because competition is fierce. But it is a great place and close to the Tetons if you like to hike. There's plenty to do in that area and the tetons are spectacular.

We did not book campsites in advance. And we could not afford to stay in any lodges, and you really don't need to. In fact I would say the park experience is increased for campers rather than lodgers: stars at night, black bears in the early morning, camp programs offered by the Park service, etc. The campsites are good ones though, with good facilities, so don't be scared to camp.

We're not campers so we stayed in at the Holiday Inn in West Yellowstone (just outside the west entrance). Neat little town with touristy shops. We would drive in each day and pick a different section of the park to explore. We loved all the site seeing and did horse back riding and water rapids at sites that were not in the park. Hope you have a wonderful trip.

I don't have any advice as to where to stay, but my favorite place to see in Yellowstone is Mammoth Hot Springs. It's at the north end of the park and I believe it was a little farther away than a lot of the other sights in the park, but it is well worth it.

My husband and I stayed at a cabin with a hot tub in Mammoth Hot Springs a few years ago. Then we went to the Old Faithful area and stayed one night there. Our biggest surprise? The Inn at Lake Yellowstone (I think that's what it's called). It's a beautiful old hotel on a beautiful lake in a less visited area of the park. It was very relaxing as well as gorgeous. I highly recommend it!

We stayed in the hotel and really enjoyed it.

It's been a while, but I've been twice. Both times I stayed on Lake Yellowstone. The first time in a hotel (not the big old yellow one, but one with a nice restaurant on the water) and the second time in cabins. Both were fantastic and amazingly beatiful. I'm not a big rustic, camping person. These were outdoors-y enough but still ... not camping!

I went there 3 years ago. Very beautiful, I loved every minute. I didn't know about the cabins/hotels in Yellowstone, so we stayed stayed in a hotel West Yellowstone, Montana which is a few mile outside the Park. There a hundreds of hotels there.

We did a winter snowmobiling trip to Yellowstone several years ago. That was a neat trip but man I don't think I've been so cold in my life!

Anyway, we stayed at the Holiday Inn that is outside the park entrance. We liked it there. Our room had a hot tub which was nice after freezing my butt off all day. :)

Part of the snowmobiling took us to Yellowstone Lodge. I would love to have stayed there. It was such a beautiful place although it is closed in the winter due to heavy snow. I'm assuming you are not going in the winter though. ;-)
