Harry Potter Fans... Warning - Spoilers! If you haven't read the book do not read!!!

There was a post last week about getting the book. Now that everyone has the book and has had a chance to read it, I want to know what you thought. Personally, I'm not convinced that Snape is evil. There's a reason Dumbledore trusted him. And there's that conversation Hagrid overhead in the woods...

Of course, now, I'm going back and re-reading all of the others. They are interesting books...

I enjoyed this book more than any of the others. I found myself thinking about it for two days afterwards...as I'm a book worm this is not the norm. I was incredibly sad that he broke up with his girlfriend. I keep hoping that he'll return to school in the Fall. I found the ending to be very powerful. I kept thinking it's a mistake, Dumbledore can't be dead. I think the author's writing has improved since she did the first books.
I plan to re-read all of the Potter books, but first I have to tackle all the new books I got on vacation.
If you could be any character in the Harry Potter books, who would you want to be? I would chose Hermione, especially as I understand her love of books and wanting to do her best in every class.

RE: Harry Potter Fans... Warning - Spoilers! If you h...

I agree with you and have a pet theory: I think that Snape took an unbreakable vow to protect Harry and that's why Dumbledore trusts him. Otherwise, the way the book is written it makes it seems as if Dumbledore, this incredibly smart and powerful wizard, was just a total dork when it came to trusting Snape. It doesn't fit the way the character has been written throughout all the books. Plus, she has always made a huge deal about Dumbledore trusting Snape in every book:Snape's supposedly saying that he regretted the death of James and Lilly--it's a really weak plot device to prop up something that she made such a huge stink about. So either she has something else up her sleeve, along the lines of an unbreakable vow, or she has gotten sloppy and lazy because she's too rich!

I also think that Snape and Dumbledore had an agreement that Snape would sacrifice Dumbledore if it came down to Snape having to reveal that he is on Dumbledore's side. Either it was a long-standing agreement, or something that Dumbledore had decided on after his hand injury--maybe it would kill him pretty soon anyhow. In either case, the reason that Dumbledore was pleading to Snape at the end was because he *wanted* Snape to kill him. There's a slight possibility that JK Rowling is even pulling an Obi Wan Knobi-type situation: Dumbledore will somehow come back stronger than ever when he's dead...but I doubt it--Harry has to defeat Voldemort on his own. Dumbledore can't always be there to save the day (which, by the way, is why my SO guessed that in this book Dumbledore would die--I knew the ending of the book before I read it).

Next book: Harry will of course track down Snape out of revenge and hatred, but Snape will somehow give his life to save Harry in the end, thereby redeeming himself and Dumbledore's trust in him. Harry is also going to be forced into the position of having to trust Malfoy somehow, who I think will turn out not to be evil in the end, though that could go either way.

There...basic plot outline done. Now if I could only get a couple of million dollars for it!

Love these books--so sorry to see them ending! I've read them from the beginning.

I'm a book worm, too. If I don't have a book in my hand, I feel naked. I think that's why I like computers so much - they're kind of living books. Always something to read about something.

But, good books to me are like best friends, and I like to visit them often. So I often re-read my collection. If I could be any character, I think I'll like to be Ginny. She has more to her than is obvious. I think they'll get back together. And Hermoine and Ron will get together. Or I hope so - I like happy endings. I'm sappy that way.

I am SO with you on the theory of Snape. There's something there. I think Dumbledore will be back in a way. His portrait is already up in the headmaster's office. He'll give advice that way. I can't image that JK would get that lazy. If Snape is as evil as he appears right now, I'll be very dissapointed. It's too obvious.

Hrm...I think I'd have to go with Harry, as he has the most "fun" (??) and also cause I know JK won't kill him off in the end! Also, cause he has the most mature role of the kids in the books, and there's no way I'd want to go back to being a clueless pre-teen again! I'd say one of the adult characters, but who knows who JK will kill off next!
