Harmstrings/Glutes

Katerchen

Cathlete
What is a good excercise method/tape to really work on the back of the thighs? Firm Tapes do not work good enough for my few (but anyway I'd rather have none) dimples. My front thighs are getting too big and I need something that focuses on the back.

I love Cathe's Leaner Legs tape because it has a nonstop pace and she does lots of work on the hamstrings and glutes. The best exercise I've found for that area has been the quarter deadlifts, which she does quite a few sets of in that particular tape. But when you do lunges, stationary or otherwise, you can sort of subtly shift your bodyweight to either work more with the quads or the hams. I find lunges a terrific way to really get the back of the legs.

But when you're talking about "dimples" that's something that weight training alone won't fix. That's usually excess bodyfat or cellulite that can only be burned off with enough cardio and a clean diet, a permanently clean diet.

Just agreeing with Lex--the ONLY thing I feel the day after Leaner Legs is my hamstrings and glutes! Usually I feel leg work in my quads more than anywhere else. I also agree with the shifting of your weight--it can make a real difference.
It is hard to explain, but when you do those deadlifts (and also squats), you have to find that place where you really squeeze so you feel it in your glutes and hamstrings. It's hard to get that, but once you do your butt will thank you (after it gets it's nice warm bath!)

RE: Clean Diet

Hi! I have 4 weeks to lose 5-10 lbs for a vacation with my husband without kids. I hear everyone talking about a Clean Diet (Lex411 mentioned it is important to get rid of the cellulite). Could someone give a typical day of a clean diet? Also how clean must you go and how hard is it to stick to this type of diet? So far I have been exercising with Cathe step tapes 3x's a week and weight work 3x's a week and my diet is so-so I need a sugar snack(such as cookies) after lunch and dinner. I am also taking a fat blocker pill 2x a day and zero carb pill 3x a day(purchased from QVC). I have not lost any weight in 2 weeks. I'm so upset. Any advice?

RE: Clean Diet

I hate to say it, but taking any pills to lose weight is a HUGE waste of your money. I don't care how compelling the ads are, there is no such thing as weight loss in a bottle.

A clean diet can be a little different for everyone, depending on your needs, genetics, goals, etc. The urge for sugar after a meal usually points to an unbalanced meal and your body craves sugar as a way to tip the scales in the other direction. But by eating sugar then you tip them too far and you're out of balance again. For myself, a clean diet means getting lots of good, low-glycemic index carbs (like salads and leafy or green veggies), good lean protein (soy, fish, chicken), keeping starches, sugar and saturated fats low. You need carbs for energy, protein is NOT a good source of fuel for that. But carbs from flour products (breads, pasta) or starches (potatoes, peas, corn) are like sugar to your body. You'd do best to avoid having them too much or too often.

Personally, I don't believe in setting goals like losing so many pounds in so many days for an occassion. It puts undue pressure on you and puts the focus on a negative aspect, not a positive. You sound like you are doing great work with the Cathe tapes. When trying to lose bodyfat, you also might consider doing more cardio, maybe doing that 4 times per week and weights twice, so you still hit each body part twice with weights but you get more cardio per week. I actually think to lose weight and make changes to your body you need cardio about 5 times per week, but starting with 4, with the weight training, could be all you need.

RE: Clean Diet

Lex, thanks for the advice it is right on the mark. My downfalls are sugar & starches(actually starches more). I also fall for the "magic" pills which never do work for me. I know if I follow your advice I would hit my goals. In some ways it seems simple but in other ways not. I'm going to copy your advice and read it when ever I need motivation(it might be several times a day at first). I think it's important to know if others can do it I can to. Thanks...Debbie

Okay, I know that this is probably a very dumb question, but I have to ask it. I have been working out for about a year and have seen TERRIFIC results, I truly have, so I can't complain. The back of my legs were very dimpled, and I have seen quite a bit of improvement. However, I still have some dimpling there and I was wondering if you think that a two year goal to get that stuff off my back side was reasonable. It has been a year and I do A LOT of cardio (5 x per week) and 3 days of weight training.
Does this seem to be the last place that this goes on everyone or is this genetic? Any ideas or comments or suggestions would be great appreciated.
Thanks,
Cynthia

P.S. I should add that my diet isn't the best, but it isn't that bad either.
