Hallelujah Acres...Raw food course?

dmd

Cathlete
Hi there,
I discovered a class offered in my area teaching the principles of raw food living. It uses the Hallelujah Acres materials. The teacher attended the course and is an instructor and also attended the Living Light Institute. There is very little support locally for Raw food living in general and am considering the course.

Does anyone here have experience with this course? What if anything can you tell me about it? I looked it up on YouTube and found a Nightline coverage about the program....looked interesting. Deb

The only things I know about Hallelujah acres is that it is a Christian raw-food group, and at one point they were tested and found to be deficient in vitamin B12 because they were not taking supplements of it and relying on mythical sources of it like seaweed and intestinal production (they've since added B12 supplementation to their diets).

Living Light Institute is the premier program for teaching raw-food chefs (a great many of the current raw-food chefs have gone through the program).

I'm not sure if any of that is helpful.

Yes, kathryn it is. I got the Christian angle of their program....I think I could get beyond that if the basic nutritional science is good. I just found out that I am EXTREMELY low in vitamin D! I am hispanic, live in central CA and am in the sun a good deal. I have developed lower GI pain over past few years and vitiligo on my hands and feet (skin disorder). My Dr. has taken me off wheat (I didn't eat much of anyway..). I feel best when I am on a vegan diet. Raw foods is interesting to me and like you am good with the "green smoothie" :). I thought I would explore Raw food through this course for the "basics" and for the support. The course is $250 for materials and 8 meetings plus food demonstations. Don't know if it will be worth it..just got to give it a whirl I guess.~deb

Vitamin D deficiency seems to be a big problem these days. I keep hearing about it and apprarently a lot of people have a deficiency.

I live in Chicago and took a class from Jenny Cornbleet (Raw Food Made Easy). It was a great class but probably not practical for you to travel. BUT - I believe she has a DVD out and does do classes/presentations in other parts of the country. She's not 100% raw and I felt she had a very balanced approach. http://www.learnrawfood.com/

Another great resource (IMO) is Alissa Cohen. Here book is great and she also has DVD's. Here cooking school/restaurant is in Boston but she has certified teachers all over the place. http://www.alissacohen.com/

Oops!
I don't know where my brain was at when I typed vitamin D before, when I meant B12.
Anyway, it was B12 (now corrected!). (though vitamin D deficiency does seem to be a big problem nowdays, in people of all dietary persuasions).

I attended one raw-food workshop my second month of going raw. It was a full day, with lunch, food demos and some basic nutritional info (and more eating of the demo food!). I frankly didn't really learn that much that I hadn't already picked up from books and DVD's, but it was nice to meet others who were interested in it, and to have the opportunity to ask some questions. It was a good boost to my motivation as well. That's the biggest benefit to going to a live class, IMO. (I've amassed quite a collection of raw-food DVD's because I like the 'live presentation' aspect of them, and it's easier to see how some things are done than to read about them. When I watch them, it's almost llike being in a live class)

Thanks Cindy for the link! I have not heard of Jenny Cornbleet, but I have heard and seen Alissa Cohen on t.v.. The vitamin D thing is a puzzle to me. Apparently very difficult to get vit. D with a plant based diet without a supplement. I am on a VERY high dose now. Now, I am looking for plant based sources that help me to assimilate the supplement.

My Dr. is testing away to see what could be causing me to have trouble getting vit. D into my system! Sheesh! So, here I go. :)

Thanks for the input!

Ah, wow, what a program. To be honest, aside from the basic info on Raw...I am SO curious about this intructors time at Living Light Institute. They seem a reputable and varied program. Thanks~deb
