half marathon

I am going to attempt my first and prob last 1/2 marathon in sept. The rock N roll 1/2 marathon. Anyone out there finish one? Any training tips?

I've never done a 1/2 marathon though I run 18K long runs. I have entered for a race in July though.

As for training tips, are you new to running?

In any case, don't increase mileage too fast. Stick to no more then a 10% increase per week. I usually go by 10% every 3 weeks, but that's just my preference.

Make sure your long runs are never more then your weekday mileage. So if you run 20K in total on weekdays, keep your long run at no more then 20K. Preferably even less.

I prefer too get the mileage in first, meaning I can already run the race distance, then when I'm comfortable, I focus on speedwork.

Make sure you eat properly, so you're body is fueled. And start your runs well hydrated (in Winter too).

There are way more experienced runners here then me, so I'm sure you'll get lots of other advice.

Enjoy running!

I have completed several half-marathons and I'm hooked. The half-marathon is just right for me. I don't feel like my body is completed exhausted afterwards and I'm usually recovered after a few days.

I used Hal Higdon's training plan and trained for 12-weeks. At first, my only goal was to just finish the run. Now my goals are to beat MY previous times.

I have a recent issue of Runners World and they have a 3-day/week half-marathon training plan that I'm going to start next week in order to prepare for a run I'm doing in June. I can't wait to see how I do with this plan. You may want to check it out...

Good luck...keep us posted on your progress.

You've got PLENTY of time to train, which is great. I ran my first 1/2 this past fall, and trained seriously for about 9 weeks, which was fine for me (I had been running a lot before the training, but not running geared toward the 1/2 distance). There are a number of great training plans out there - pick one and stick with it. Also, listen to your body - if you are due for a long run, but you feel especially tired or sore, take a rest day instead (and don't feel guilty about it!). Training smart to prevent injury is key, and mix in a lot of varied running such as speedword, tempo runs, hills, plus the long run - that will give you a great mix of endurance and speed to give you the strength you'll need for the 1/2.

I LOVE this distance - had a great race, and can't wait to do another. It's a perfect distance for me - I hope that you enjoy it as well!

One more thing - if you don't run with either a friend or a running group already, I'd highly recommend finding one. It helps out SO much when you are training with someone else, especially when you are heading out for a 12/13/14 mile run!

The Runner's World plan is the one that I have been doing and I really like it! I ran seven miles for the first time in my life and it wasn't hard! I think that you will do great! :)

Missy,

Isn't it a great feeling? After a few weeks of running 10+ miles on the weekends, it hit me one day that I truly and honestly felt that a 10 mile run was really no big deal - just a regular old run - and I was SO thrilled! Wow - I can run 10 miles, NO PROBLEM!

Running is a fantastic sport. :)
