Gym Shoes

Hi everyone, I'm wondering what shoes does Cathe wear for all her new tapes and weight lifting? Are they Ryka? I have gym shoes that are several years old, some that are 1 year old, and some that 6 months old. Lately, I've been getting a lot of foot pain, and I'm wondering should I toss the older gym shoes and how long should I keep them for? It's just tough throwing out shoes that cost about $100, so that you have to buy them again in 6 months. Can I continue to use the older shoes for weight training or is that harming me? Am I jumping too hard, or is this normal? I have bought crosstrainers, but I don't think they work as effieently as aerobics shoes do, for the step or high impact aerobics. Help, anyone? Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!:)

Hi, Lourdy! It's very normal if you're doing a lot of high impact activities to need to replace your shoes every 6 - 9 months. The cushioning just loses its spring after a while. If you're having foot pain, I would definitely take that as a sign that it's time to get some new ones. It does hurt to shell out the big bucks when they still LOOK fine, but your joints are worth the $$, right? :) For weight training, as long as you still have some good tread so you won't slide and lose form, I think you're probably okay. But if you're doing circuit training where you're alternating aerobic activity with weights work, you want to stick with the shoes that still have good cushioning.

I know Cathe has used Ryka shoes in her past videos, so I'm sure what she's using in the newest videos are also Rykas. My faves are discontinued, but if you can find some, they are called Regalia II. They are great for the high impact stuff, plus the tread design makes it easier to do turns and pivots on carpet than others I've tried. Good luck!

Thank you Erin, I posted this same message on Ask Cathe, because I was wondering if she uses Ryka. Do you use those for strentgh training and Cardio? Or should I buy crosstrainers for weight training and aerobic ones for step/aerobics, because her new tapes incorporate strentgh and cardio, so I would probably want a shoe that would be great for both. Thanks again.;)

Rykas, my knee-savers! :)

I use my Ryka aerobic shoes for both cardio and weights. A lot of the differences between the shoes for various activities lie in where and how much cushioning and support they have, based on where the impact and stresses are for that activity. ( More cushioning in the heel for running shoes vs. more cushioning in the toe for aerobic shoes, for example ) Since there really isn't any IMPACT per se in weight training, I think any shoe that is comfortable and has sufficient tread so your stance doesn't slide around would be fine. I don't see why crosstrainers would be necessary for weight training.

I have tried other brands, but nothing gave my foot the support it needed so desparately as Rykas. I prefer a mid to high top, rather than the low cut, because I need the ankle support ever since I sprained my right ankle in a fall 2 years ago, but that's an individual preference. Also, if you're trying to decide between 2 different aerobics shoes, I have found that having a somewhat more flexible sole to be more comfortable in stepping, since there is so much toe ball heel as you go up and down on the step.

A note of caution: I have, on occasion, been told by uniformed ( or perhaps sales hungry ) sales people in stores that cross trainers are just as good for aerobics as aerobics shoes. This is usually when they are out of my size in aerobic shoes. :) This is NOT the case. For the kind of high impact you're doing in Cathe's videos, it's VERY important to have shoes designed for this activity.

I hope this helps! Have a great night!

Where to find Rykas?

Where to find Rykas?

I used to be able to get Rykas at the mall at a shoe store, but they don't have them anymore and I can't find them anywhere. I looked online at justforfeet, d!ck's sports, JC Penney and finishline. I found some at ladyfootlocker and QVC, but not the kinds I want. Any ideas?

RE: Where to find Rykas?

Hi Erica, I know exactly what you mean, you just can't find these gym shoes everywhere. But, I looked for fitness shoes and I found www.womens-sports.com, where I saw the new Ryka Re-Evolution and I am going to purchase them today. Hope that helps!

RE: Rykas, my knee-savers! :)

Hi Erin, thank you sooooooo much! I have decided to purchase them online today! Thanks again, you're wonderful!;-)

RE: Where to find Rykas?

I have found Rykas at the Lady Footlocker. They have a website
www.Ryka.com where they have a store locater to tell you where you can purchases Rykas. They also have great descriptions of their shoes. Thats how I decide which ones Iam going to buy. If you have questions you can email them. I have done this several times and sometimes they respond quickly and sometimes it takes awhile but they do respond.

I absolutely love Rykas and will never buy any other brand again.

You can also call their 800 number

That's what I did to find a store in my area that carries them. It's 1-800-255-RYKA. They really are the best brand I've ever worn! :)

RE: You're welcome!

I read this message and decided to check at lucy.com. They had the Ryka re-evolution for $80, but they have a $20 off coupon so I ended up saving about $6 by buying them there. Just another online source.

lucy.com

Thank you for the tip-off about lucy.com! I just picked up a pair of New Balance cross-trainers for $44.95 :-wow (plus some spinning shorts to hit that $75 for $20 off). It's so hard to fit these darn 11 AA's.

:) Gretchen

P.S. New Balance seems to call of their non-walking/running shoes cross-trainers. :-hmmm

RE: lucy.com

Just thought I would add that any time I have ever dealt with Lucy.com, I was greeted with the most helpful and welcoming sales rep. They are a pleasure to do business with.

I actually found the Ryka Regelina II at SportMart just last night. They were on clearance sale for $29.99 :-wow :-wow :-wow . They only had about 5 pair. Two of them were in my size :D . I decided to try them, but hadn't read this thread yet. I should have picked both pairs. Guess I should rush back there and get the other pair.

One more note, it's been a while since I looked for "aerobic shoes". Seems as though they are now referred to "fitness shoes". Anybody else find this to be true?

Hi everyone, I received my new RYKA Re-evolution gym shoes, and I have to say, they feel wonderful, I guess I'm hooked, like with Cathe's tapes. I appreciate everyone's comments and I want to mention that it is certainly a pleasure to speak to all of you on this forum. God bless you all, and keep up the good work!
