Grocery Shopping

All right, ladies, I'm going grocery shopping today. What new and exciting things should I try from the organic section of my supermarket? So far you have hooked me on soy milk and Kashi Go lean Crunch. Any other suggestions?

Hi Shelley,

Hope you don't mind me joining you in getting some info on this too. I love kashi cereals but not soy milk. I still use skim.

Terri

Did you get my e-mail yesterday?

Shelley,

Kaski Go Lean Crunch has too much sugar in it. You should try the High Protein version and just add a pinch of splenda in there if you want some sweetness, JMHO.
I also like to use cottage cheese as a veggie dip. Ever tried it, its good! '
Oh, don't forget the watermelon. I just bought some cantaloupe too that was as sweet as candy. Best I had so far.

Charlotte - I don't actually eat a whole bowl of Kashi. I have Bran Flakes and All Bran and I mix a little bit of Kashi in with it. Not even a quarter cup. I can't eat huge amounts of protein at once, it hurts my insides. But I like a little bit of sweetness, so I use the Kashi for that.:)

I found Amy's Organic Burrito's and Cedarlane Bruschetta in the organic section - VERY GOOD!!! Smoothies are a lot of fun - strawberries, bananas, frozen mangos, plain yogurt, a little soy milk. OH! And I just discovered No Pudge ice cream bars and cones and sandwiches....only 100-140 calories and 2.5 grams of fat. SO GOOD!! :9

Linda McCartney has some excellent organic frozen foods as well. I love them. I've had the pizza ones and the squash ravioli one that is to die for. Excellent food!

I like Amy's Organic shepard's pie too. Veggies and potato top. I think that's a shepard's pie. It is really good.

>Have you tried the Vanilla flavoured Silk soy milk?
>OMGoodness IT'S SO GOOD!!!

Shelley,

Do you get any stomach pain from soy milk? I started getting stomach pain and thought it might be food related, so I went back to skim and the pains have gone away. It went on for several weeks. I'm afraid to try it again.

I don't like cereal, but I love oatmeal. I'm pretty well stocked on that (the slow cooking kind), wheat germ and Hood Brand Fat-Free milk, which has lower carbs and higher protein.

Other things I stock up on are apples (because they help fight the sugar cravings), spinach, mushrooms, asparagus, cottage cheese, eggs, bottled water, fat-free cheese, whole wheat bread, chicken breast, tuna and salmon.

I've stopped stocking up on nuts because I tend to overeat those.:(

Terri I stopped drinking milk completely a couple of months ago because it is not easy to find organic skim or low fat organic milk over here. I have to agree with Shelley, vanilla flavored soy milk is the best. My favorite is Vitasoy's Enriched Smooth Vanilla. It has 4g of fat for 8oz and it has calcium and some vitamins and minerals. If you find 4g of fat to be too much they have a low fat version but it is too watery for my taste. When I can't find smooth vanilla I buy the low fat vanilla, but I prefer the creamier one (the low fat is way too watery). I only have about 1 glass a day for cereal (2 if I use it for a shake) so I don't think 4-8g of fat will make any difference. I try to get my calcium from various sources not just soymilk so I buy the one that has more flavor and drink less of it.

Shelley I bought the greatest Oat Bran cereal about a month ago. Old Wessex Ltd. 100% Natural Whole grain Oat Bran Natural High Fiber Cereal. It takes 60 seconds to cook. You boil water and add salt (optional but highly recommended because it makes it taste way better) then add the cereal. Before I cook the cereal I peel half an apple and I cook it with a tiny bit of canola margarine and a tiny bit of water, cinammon and stevia to taste and I cook it until is soft enough for my taste. Then I cook the cereal apart with a little bit of vanilla extract, cinammon and stevia (if I taste it and it needs it). Then when the cereal is done I add the apples on top of it. If the cereal is extremely hot I add cold soymilk to cool it down a bit. Yum! Great breakfast alternative and you make it in about 5 minutes.

Daikon radish
You can prepare like potatoes, but it's low glycemic, and has a bit of a bite to it!
Persimmons (though I think they may not be in season until fall)
broccoli sprouts
tempeh (steam and either grate or crumble and use instead of chicken for a "mock chicken salad")
Mirin (a japanese cooking sake that is good for stir fryiing with little or no oil added. Gives a slightly sweet taste as well.)

Silk has an enhanced soy milk with Omega 3's and anti-oxidants plus calcium and folate which Ithink is excellent. I like vanilla but I like plain too. I love Silk's creamer. I have organic everything, beans, canned tomatoes, paste sauce, pasta, bread and tortillas, whole wheat, lots of fiber. Eggs, cheese, sour cream butter, yogurt are all available too. And don't forget the produce! Get thee to the organic section and chose a few things that look interesting. Garden burger has a red pepper and garlic offer that rocks and there are so many choices, it's fun to experiement. Do you have a cahin like Whole Foods or Wild Oats at hand, Shelly?

I like that one, too!
SOmetimes, vanilla soymilk seems to have a lot of sweetening in (I'm not sure if Silk does, but other brands do).

I'm probably chiming in too late, but just in case (or for future reference) here are my favorite organic foods:

1. StonyBrook Farms Organic Plain Lowfat Yogurt- it also comes in whole and fat free. I mix it with berries and a little splenda for breakfast or sometimes for a dessert. Yum! Nice and rich and creamy.

2. Boca Original Vegan burgers. Yum! Before I discovered these 2 years ago I would crave beef burgers (before I got serious about my health I was a fast food junkie), but not anymore! Now I don't even LIKE beef burgers. LOL I buy these at Costco, it's a great deal for a big box.

3. Also at Costco I buy a huge bag of organic petite green beans- no added salt or anything, just plain beans. They are delicious!

4. Also at Costco, I buy a case of Silk Organic Vanilla Soymilk. Rich and vanilla-y and delicious- and another great deal, if you have the space to store it.

Those are a few of my current favorites. Good luck, hope you find some yummy organics!

I love Costco! Their organics section has grown and grown. They carry organic milk, three half gallons for much less than groceries, but, it's 2% which is yucky to me. I am hoping they'll add fat free very soon. My kids drink a fair amount of milk since they love cereal for meals, for snacks. It's sad that finding it for a couple of bucks a half gallon is exciting. It's usually at least $2.50 and as high as $4.00! Used to get 2 gallons for $3.00 back in the days before I was aware of how conventially raised dairy is done! I stockpile non-perishables which makes the higher cost of some of the organics seem less shocking, and Trader Joe's, which are popping up all over, Trader Joe's is fabulous! Did you know that most pesticides were developed by the military for use as chemical weapons? And we all know the addition of hormones is very bad for the health of our immune systems. Get out there and demand more. Our local health food chain is becoming more and more competitive as organics pop up all over. Happy hunting! Organics rule! :)

How'd you do, Shelley?

I perused the organic section but it's difficult to do when grocery shopping with a 7 year old who HATES grocery shopping:p There is an absolutely FABULOUS health food store fairly close by and so I plan to go next weekend and spend some time perusing the aisles. I've got some great suggestions now! Thanks everyone.

I checked out protein bars too. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA - holy man those things are calorie laden. Needless to say, I did not indulge in any.

Thanks again for the wonderful suggestions:)
