Gotta Vent

Cathlete
I've been a little on the sick side for a couple of weeks now, and it sucks because I haven't been able to work out. I DID work out last Sunday (did abs, GS Chest/Tris, and the Lowmax Step Only), but regretted it. I think it weakened me more and I developed a mild sinus infection. Arrrggghhh!

So, I'm just listening to my body and will not rush getting back into my Cathe workouts. I know that with my asthma I have to be especially careful not to overdo it when I'm getting over a cold or flu. And since I'm experiencing a little chest congestion, I know that doing aerobics right now is out of the question. I'm just not going to risk making myself sicker.

It's a little depressing because I have all these new HC workouts and I can't do them!!!

Also, last weekend during my GS Chest/Tris workout, I started feeling a little nauseous. I had to stop and take a break, then came back and finished the workout later on. But I've noticed that, especially with arm work, I will get a little nauseated during the hard lifting (the biceps in PUB, for example). I'd never experienced this on the chest and tricep work, though, so it caught me off guard last week. I've always just attributed it to the fact that I'm overheating, even though last weekend I wasn't even breaking a sweat, yet, when the nausea came over me (by the way, the sickness I had last week was more stress-related -- not the flu -- then I developed the sinus infection and congestion this week). But I heard something on the radio that concerned me. Nausea is a sign of heart problems. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I know that women often have different symptoms of heart disease, or even heart attacks, than men, and nausea is mentioned.

Nausea can come from many different things. I wouldn't be as surprised if it were from lying down moves, or doing stability ball or ab work or other lying work if you ate a rather full meal too quickly before working out. But during ab work? Maybe you're holding your breath and creating pressure? Or maybe supporting your arms against your body and pushing in an area that affects the stomach?

Hey there catwoman,
You could get nauseous for many reasons and so don't assume its your heart. If your blood pressure drops, or your fighting an infection or are tired and pushing things, ear ache, sinus infection all can cause you to suddenly feel nauseated. But for your own peace of mind, see the doctor and until then don't do anything that makes you sick. I find that if I am sick and can't work out, I still do fitness related activities to keep my motivation up such as compose a rotation for when you are up to working out, review workout logs to see how much progress you have already made, come to these forums etc. Let us know how you make out.:)

i agree with nurse cathy, you need to rest. Don't push it. Sit and read and let it pass. You keep pushing you will make yourself weaker and be layed up longer than you think.

I know you know to drink a lot of water while you have this sinus congestion, it will work it's way out.

Peace

Thanks, everybody.

I actually saw the doctor today, and he prescribed an antibiotic for what appears to be a mild sinus infection. It's an ugly yellow pill...and I have to take two of them one time per day for ten days. Yuck! I'll start tomorrow morning. I hate taking medicine. x( I'm always afraid I will have a reaction since I'm allergic to everything from here to the moon.

At any rate, I am drinking lots of water and tea, and drinking O.J. and sucking on Halls Defense lozenges with Vit. C, echinacea, and zinc. That seems to be helping.

And, I haven't worked out since last weekend. :( :( :-(

And, Cathy, you will be pleased to hear that I have been looking at modifying my diet and reading a new book about cleaner eating. I have even tried a couple of recipes from the book this week. So, while I haven't been able to exercise, I have been trying to improve my diet and eating habits. I have also been thinking about what kind of rotation I want to get back into when I get better.

By the way, I actually got nauseous while doing chest presses and flyes last week. That's what made me stop before continuing on to triceps about an hour later. My body doesn't react well to getting too hot, so maybe that's what happened. Being that I wasn't sweating to cool off, that could explain it. It WAS weird that I wasn't sweating, because I usually sweat like crazy during my strength training workouts. Maybe my system was just out of whack from trying to fend off this infection.

Sorry so long...Thanks everybody!
