Good site on BFL

Thanks for the website. I thought it was very informative. I like how he spelled it out in black and white how the body uses energy. It was like being in Biology class all over again. Sometimes it is hard to believe that all of that takes place in the body.

Are you doing Body for Life? I've been thinking about doing it for some time now. Actually, I have sorta been doing it all along, but did not know it.

Thanks again!
Kristi

Hi,
I have been thinking about it a lot! I have the book and read lots of Muscle Media and looked into discussion groups as well. Apparently people take the challenge several times so the 12 week period isn't really the end all be all. The after pics were of champions selected from thousands of entrants so ofcourse they look amazing.
Then again, he promotes WEIGHTS,CARDIO,DIET and SUPPLEMENTATION. That's basically what you have to do anyway whether it is BFL or any other regimen. What I like is that he spells it out for you. If you eat 6 meals they better be smaller than your original 3 meals. If you exercise or diet you better not be sleeping all day or eating cookies.
I love his Myoplex shake but it sure is pricey!
I tried his weights and you do get very strong real quick...so he must know what he's talking about. I only tried it for awhile because at the time I wasn't sure I could do the whole program. The diet part is easier to live with because it is based on portion control and eyeballing. I have been trying to follow that and find it manageable. The recipes are so basic...a chicken breast a baked potato and a small salad.
I haven't tried the 20 minute aerobic solution. Some say they saw fat loss some say they didn't. I think what he wants is to maximize muscle gain and that's why his cardio is only 20 minutes...Interval training and spinning would probably work well with it then.
I like my Cathe workouts but have been looking at CTX because it has short intense cardio and at IMAX because if I ever try BFL I might use them for it just for variety.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-03-02 AT 03:35PM (Est)[p]I actually did the BFL program for about 2 weeks, even though I pretty much eat the way he wants you to even when I'm not on it. I stopped because I had just bought some new Cathe videos and I wanted to try them out. I pretty much started back with BFL this week, but instead of doing just 20 minutes 3 times a week, I will do IMax one day and then 2 20 minute sessions.

You would think that just 20 minutes would not be enough, that is until you try it. The intensity that he says to do really kicked my a**. I was so relieved when the 20 minutes were over because I don't think I could have done anymore. My legs felt like jello. I did my intervals on my treadmill.

Here is the running "interval" routine I followed. (I thought I would try increments of .5 mph up to my max speed to see how I would feel afterwards.)

(2 minutes - warm up) - 4.5 mph

(1 minute) - 5.0 mph
(1 minute) - 5.5 mph
(1 minute) - 6.0 mph
(1 minute) - 6.5 mph
Repeat the above 3 more times
(1 minute) - 7.0 mph
(1 minute - cool down) - 3.5 mph walk

By the time I reached the 1 minute of 7 mph I was so exhausted that I did not know if I could do it, but you just have to keep telling yourself only 60 seconds left, only 45 seconds, etc. I've done IMax without very much problem at all, but this was in a league all of its own. I will never knock getting cardio done in 20 minutes as long as it is as intense as you can possibly make it.

About the fat loss, I have actually lost 15 pounds since mid August. I can not contribute it all to BFL though because I have also been doing Cathe videos. However, I think that his plan has some merit to it. That is why I am trying it again.

Hi,
I'm going to try your threadmill workout tomorrow morning! Just to see what happens. I'm trying to find other ways to do cardio since once the couch arrives there won't be much room to exercise in my apartment. Kind of burning out on PS lately and might try working out downstairs at the rec room. Thanks for sharing!

I didn't read all of the post but from what I gathered maybe you guys are considering doing BFL? I did it for about 3 weeks. Now, tht doesn't sound very good b/c I obviously didn't stick to it:-(.
I did get results in those 3 weeks though.I went down to 123 pounds on the scale.I am normally 125-128.The eating is managable.I am a hairdresser so I had to have my inbetween meals in a shake.I didn't have time to sit and eat.
The only thing I wasn't fussy about was the workouts.I didn't mind the 20 min run b/c I had my workout done but I wasn't use to the way they do weight lifting.I like to feel a burn and I didn't.Besides for that I couldn't use my Cathe tapes at all.BUt I really think it just as alot to do with nutrition and working out on a empty stomach.
The book did get me into that.I am sitting here at 6:30 trying to wake up.
Basically, I love the program and what it did for me.I threw it down b/c those cheat days are horrible.Personally, I think the cheat days are for people who eat horrible ALL the time and they want you to gorge yourself to see how terrible it use to feel. For people like us, who eat normally and workout often, I would suggest just having one treat. It makes it harder to get back on track. Not a whole day of eating.
But my plan as been that when the new videos are out I will start again b/c of the pyramid system which is alot like the book, except probably longer. What a great wayy to start the new year off.:-jumpy.
Hope I helped, if you have anymore questions, let me know,
Lori

LAST EDITED ON Dec-04-02 AT 09:50AM (Est)[p]Lori, I was thinking the same thing about using Cathe's new pyramid system along with BFL. I'm so excited about the new tapes and I am going to incorporate them into my BFL. Finally, I got to order them yesterday (I received my Christmas bonus at work.). I've found that if I workout to a tape then I work harder and push myself harder than if I did weights on my own. Go figure. Maybe I'm just weird. I feel that way because I have a nice soreness in my muscles the following day or two following a tape workout. Right now I'm just trying to find what works for me and sometimes I need to tweak the program. (That is where Cathe's tapes come in.) What is the point in working out if you don't challenge yourself?

I also agree with you about the cheat day. My cheat day is generally a higher calorie/fat dinner than I would not cook throughout the work week. My cheat day is either Saturday or Sunday. I don't go all out and binge like he said we could do. It is too easy to set yourself up for failure that way, but an occassional indulgence shouldn't hurt.

R_Lam, how did that treadmill workout work for you? I just do increments of .5 mph, but you could also do inclines to add a different kind of intensity. I haven't added inclines yet, my shins are not ready for them.

Good luck doing BFL.

Hussman is a great site.

Have you tried www.leanandstrong.com? Very big on BFL, BodyRX, and a few other programs. Very well organized and informative with an especially good photo transformation gallary.

By the way, just recently I posted a question on leanandstrong asking if anyone there worked out with Cathe's tapes and one gal chimed in and said that two of her friends were on Cathe's latest series ( I didn't ask which ones...but was dying to know). Anyway, I asked if they were BFLers and she said they used BodyRX instead. Interesting huh? Wonder if it is true.

I don't think that your weird b/c i do the same things. If I had to go to a gym and work out on my own, I would NEVER get anything done. And it is alot easier to say "that's enough, I think I'll go home now".
I am so excited about the tapes as well.I hope that they will be here for christmas, if not it will be a great way to start the year off.

Hi,
I haven't had the chance to try the threadmill yet! Or even start the program. SIGH. But once I get organized I will! The nutrition part is coming along fine but lately I've been having cookies...can't seem to help it! Still getting results though and trying to do the workouts (PS series) before breakfast and doing some cardio. Want to get CTX for the short cardios and the new Pyramid series. Or maybe IMAX 2 for intervals...I really like working out in my apartment better than the gym. The only thing though is that it is harder to increase the weights. I find with PS...I'm still stuck at 8 lb lateral raises and 5 pounds for tricep extensions. It's been 6 months.

Hey thanks everyone for the info. I am starting BFL on 12/30/02.
The treadmill pgm looks hard, but I will try it.

bye

Lorie

I tried BFL and couldn't stick to it, although I like the exercise rotation but I need the structure of videos. I also didn't like the eating method. I'm a vegan and I hate portion control. Cookiebaby
