Going insane!!

Sorry if this is a tmi but I gotta vent lol. Ok so about a week ago I started experiencing symptoms which KINDA seemed like a uti (except no burning during urination). I was noticing that I constantly had to pee and when i sat down to go it would barely come out. Well Wednesday night I was at work and had to pee, so I went to the bathroom and tried to go but couldn't. So I waited a little which and tried again and still NOTHING. This went on for about 2 hours until my lower stomach was sticking out so far I looked a few month pregnant, and I was in so much pain I thought I was going to explode. So I called my dr and she told me to go to the hospital immediately, so I did.

Once I got there they asked for a urine sample, but I couldn't go. So the nurse decided to scan my bladder to make sure I had enough fluid in there. "You can't go?!!" she says to me. Apparently my bladder was full to "max capacity" (as the nurse said. So they immediately put a catheter in. OUCH, btw. Anyway they decided to do a cat scan to look at my kidneys and everything came back normal. The told me I had acute urinary retention. So 4 hours later they sent me home with the catheter attached to my leg which is very uncomfortable and a pain in the a**.

I went to a urologist on Thursday and she told me I have to keep the catheter in till Monday because I may start to retain urine again. Great. So now I'm housebound till monday since both my jobs are on your feet, dealing with the public kinda jobs (hairstylist and server) and it would be gross to be running around work with a bag of piss on my leg lol.

I haven't worked out since Wednesday and I have barely been getting any exercise at all. Except for the trips back and forth to the bathroom every hour or so. I have a pair of 2 lb. weight that I've kinda been punching and doing arm circles with for some sort of exercise, since they told me no heavy lifting. And its hard to even walk because this stupid thing constantly feels like its pulling.

So bottom line... I feel fat for laying around most of the day and eating not great (due to stress and this little state of depression), and am just very uncomfortable and am going stir-crazy! Anyone ever heard of this happening? Acute urinary retention? I didn't have a uti at all and my kidneys were fine so I (and the dr's) have no idea what caused it. :(

Milla, I've never had clinical UTI nor has my DH; HOWEVER, about a year and a half ago DH had to have a "little" procedure done to lop off a small mass on the bottom of his bladder, and of course they had to go up through you-know-where. This procedure inflamed the tissues so much that, like you, he ultimately had to have a catheter and leg bag put in for - get this - 10 days!!!!! Also like you, in the immediate hours after the procedure he kept trying and trying to go with zero results, and when they finallly catheterized him the bag filled up immediately and they had to empty it out within five minutes. Scary - his bladder could have burst.

I do feel for you, Milla. But when the kidneys and bladder ain't workin' nothin's workin'. Feel free to vent away here as much as you need to - but keep that baby firmly in place until all of your parts are functional again.

Ugh, you poor thing! I don't really have any advice to give, but just wanted to send some healing vibes your way. Hope you're feeling back to normal soon!!!

Oh - sorry to hear that! Hope you are better soon. I've never experienced this, but used to have a painfully shy bladder. I could not go if I knew somebody might hear. Once it was so bad that I could hardly walk but I was in a very busy place and just could not go. I'm not saying that you suddenly developed this, but if for whatever reason you could not go once, then psychologically, it can really mess you up. Then you stress and worry about it, really trying to go, and it just won't work. May not be at all your problem, but just in case, wanted to mention it. I worked and worked to talk myself through it. Whatever it is, I hope you are better very soon.

Yea my bag filled with in 10 mins too! The urologist had to put me on Flomax to "shrink" my bladder back down to normal size because having that much fluid in it stretched it out big time! What was your DH able to do with this contraption on? Did he leave the house? Every time I have left the house (which was twice. once for dr and once to run the the convenience store) it has made me so uncomfortable and in pain.

Shana, I have always had a shy bladder myself. The only places I can sit down and just pee freely is at my or my bf's house or in a private bathroom where I knew noone could hear or walk in on me. What did you do to get past this shy bladder thing?

I worked and worked at it! My ex actually helped me. He was so open about everything and would just pee away whether I was in the bathroom or not. No way could I do that. So, he would stand outside the door - with me knowing it - and then he would stand inside the bathroom but not look my way, until I could go. We just kept doing that. I kept telling myself that I didn't care if I heard somebody peeing in a stall next to me in public- it is what we were in there for, and quite frankly, I often didn't even notice it unless I was thinking about it, so why on earth would they be focusing on me! Then when I could go, I would get so excited and wonder if they heard that it would stop, then I would be embarrassed that it had stopped and wouldn't start up again. Then I would worry and nothing more would come out. Sometimes, I would sit there forever but try not to focus on peeing. Next to impossible to do, but when I quit stressing so much about it, it got easier. Now it isn't an issue with me but I dealt with it for years. I also learned to put toilet paper in the toilet and pee on that to help with the sound or depending on the type of toilet, pee at the front where there is no water so it wouldn't make a sound. All the best to you. I know how uncomfortable it is to deal with this. I'm surprised I didn't end up in the hospital the one time that it was so bad. Fortunately, I had caring friends who understood my problem and were patient so we stopped at every bathroom until I could finally go in peace!! They didn't understand it but they were very sweet about it, and just wanted me to go so I could walk normally again and enjoy the day.

Milla, DH stayed home for the duration. He had tons of PTO time saved up and a legal paid holiday thrown in, so he didn't worry about missing work. He was ambulatory and could drive with some creative shifting, but life got pretty basic for awhile while that thing was in.

For you, I have the feeling this is gonna have to be one of these times when you say "*sigh* 10 days I'm never getting back", lay back and endure it. This too shall pass.

Hey - you made me think of my poor father! He's got prostate cancer and it's enlarged his prostate so much that it sealed his bladder shut. His ankles started to swell because he literally couldn't pee. Well, he went to the doc and when his blood work said it appeared his kidney's were failing, they put a cathedar (sp?) in, and for the first two days all he passed was bits of tissue and blood and NOW to pee, he has to put one in himself 3 times a day! UUGG!

Thats a sin! I hope he is doing a little better, Reese!

Today is the day they are supposed to remove it. Wish me luck!
