Going for running shoes this weekend

My legs are still hurting. My calves more. The shin is better today. Thanks for the advice.
Sarah, I will hit the gym style ball work.
I usually do I series per week, and 1 total body, cardio in between.
Maybe I am just not strengthening the right muscles. I was really hurting yesterday. Biofreeze day.
I am giving legs another day to work out the pain. I am on my feet 9+ hours a day so no leg workouts today.
Carole, any advice on shoe brand. I did a search ,but i have to try them on. CAn't online order.
Asics similar to what I have were #1. I was told Nikie shox are good too.

Anne...it really depends on what shoes fit best. Personally I think Nikes are over rated and too expensive. I ran in Adidas for years until they changed them a bt, now Reeboks work better for me. I also run better in Stability type shoes rather than Cushion. But if you go to a specialty shop where they can see you run, they will be able to help a great deal...:)...let us know what you get....(I love getting new running shoes!!)...:)...Carole

speciality stores are great!!! i may have payed abit more at the store then i would have online but they really checked out my feet and spent 45mins with me trying on all different types of shoes that would suit my feet until i found THE pair. i got new balances they fit like a dream. i used to wear nikes and adidias in high school for sports but when i tried them on in the store they were the most uncomfortable ones i did try on.

sometimes legs just hurt after hard workouts. i had a short run just yesterday and my calf was feeling tight, even though i spent 20 mins. stretching out the body. its feeling much better today but it still happens we are only human.

I third the notion of the specialty stores by Carole and Kassia. I will only buy my running shoes in stores like this now. They really know what they are talking about. Also, the place where I go has treadmills so that they can watch you run and recommend shoes for you. It is well worth it!!!!

Anne,

The brand really depends on what type of arch you have and your strike. I hit almost all on the forefoot and the heels look almost brand new after 465 miles so I need tons of forefoot cushion and a high arch puts me in a stability shoe. My point? It all depends on how your foot is shaped and how you run...we are all different.

I was at my specialty store yesterday and I asked one of the trainers there about shin splints (with you in mind) and he told me that they really focus on strengthening the calf as well as the tibialis to support the shin. A move he showed me for the tibialis...stand about a foot or so way from a wall but lean upper body back so back of shoulders and head are up against the wall. Shift weight to the heels so toes are pointing up, then point toes forward, flex toes up, point toes, flex toes.

Keep icing and rubbing sports gel (if it helps).

Let us know how your shopping goes!!

I agree that shoes are going to be specific to each person. Go to a specialty store and get fitted.

Another thing to try if you can is to get 2 pairs of different shoes. Since you are on your feet all day without working out I find this to be very helpful.

You won't break your shoes down as fast and your feet really like the change of pace.

Here is a bit of general footwear information I have put together for those in need...

As someone who used to work in this industry I would suggest you hit a reputable store for a good fitting but avoid chains as honestly the knowledge on shoes and the foot are just not there.

Here are some guidelines on shoes (just an FYI)...

1. Nikes are good for those with narrow feet. They are narrow all the way from the toebox to the heel. Reebok tends to fall into this catagory these days as well. As far as the SHOX go, it takes a lot to make them work for you in a way that is worth $120. If you are using them to exercise, a good price point is $50.00 as a starter.

2. For those with basically normal fee (not really wide, not so skinny), Asics are a great shoe. They specialize in running shoes for the avid runner but also make fantastic crosstrainers. They have wonderful stability and cushioning and are among some of the best I have tried.

2. For those with wide feet New Balance are great b/c they come in widths and can accomodate those with a wide toebox but a narrow heal easily. Another good one with a wide toebox and narrow heal is Adidas.

3. For those with a wider toebox and heel, Saucony is a wonderful (lesser known shoe).

4. A shoe that is fabulous for women that is also lesser known is Ryka. They are the ONLY shoe built specifically for women. All other shoe manufacturers basically "shrink" a mens shoe to make a womens shoe. Ryka does not do this and you would be suprised but it really makes all the difference. They used to only make aerobics shoes so I know that they do this well. They have recently started making runners and walkers as well and again, do a great job.

I hope this helps you a bit. I know it is a lot of info but sometimes it helps to have some guidelines even if you do go to a running store for a fitting.

Well we don't have a running store. We have the mall and Dicks. Dicks usually knows nothing.
I have Ryka's . Too big in toes. I have nikies too tight in toes.
I have asic gels runners. That is what i had on the other night when my legs died.I really like these.90.00 range when i bought them.
I have about 4 pair of New balance. Every day cross shoes.
I am not really worried about cost as much as comfort. They only get worn at home.
Does footlocker or any of the mall stores like Champs have people that know anything.
I live i the country. Our stores are limited .I have no desire to drive to Pittsburgh.
I am going to the mall sunday and there is a dicks behind it.
Thank you so much for the help.

If the shoes are for running, make sure you get a running shoe...not a cross trainer shoe. Ask about there return policy, that way if you run in them for 3 weeks and realize you are not in love, you can return them. I just got $90 back on a pair I have had for 5 weeks...they took them back without me even asking (long story). However, they know I'll be back.

I agree that you should rotate 2 pairs of shoes but you need to know if it is true love before stocking up. That can take some time.

Do you mind if I ask where you live? I want to try to do a search...

..ok....I am finding a lot of Bait shops and Gun shops near Acme. Maybe you should take up fishing or killing things. Better yet, both! Use what you kill for bait!

Not done searching!

I found it at Runner's World website. My husband helped me because when it comes to doing a search...I SUCK! I keep trying though!

I knew the Philly stuff would be too far since you mentioned not wanting to drive an hour to Pitt. I may not know how to do a search but I know the distance between Pitt and Philly is a good hike!

Another idea...maybe you could get in touch with your local high schools cross country coach and he/she may be able to direct you to a brand suited for you. When someone has a solid knowledge on a subject, they are often eager to talk about it. (Like me knowing that Pitt and Philly are a few miles apart).

If you do go shopping on your own, refrence the information in the earlier post listing the characterisics of each brand of shoe.

CRITICAL: Buy a 1/2 size larger running shoe than you would other shoes. Wherever you go, make sure they measure your foot. If you measure a size 8, buy a size 8.5 running shoe.

Happy Shopping!!! Let us know how it goes!! keep us updated on those shin splints! How are they feeling today??
