Go Ahead....Yell at me.....

I believe I am about 8-10 weeks pregnant (am having all the necessary test performed tomorrow) and I have gained about 5 pounds because I have been eating because my stomach feels like it has a black hole burning through it. When I eat it feels better. I am not happy about the weight gain. I have been committed to exercise for about 2 years and I am afraid it will all go to pot. I know some people will frown at my comments, and tell me to just worry about the baby, which I do. But that doesn't mean that since I am pregnant that I, the woman, has all of a sudden disappeared and no longer count.

Thanks for listening!

You won't hear any yelling from my end. I know EXACTLY how you feel. After watching family members/family gain weight from pregnancies & never return to original size...I was frieghtful as well.

I continued my exercises through pregnancy, and didn't worry to much about weight gain. I gained about 35-lbs by end of pregnancy, and lost it ALL within 3 weeks. I know my results may be atypical, but I watched what I ate, and exercised when I could. After my baby was born, I resumed exercise about 5 weeks after he was born (had C-section) and with amazement my body DID return!!! Yours will too!!!

Congrats on your pregnancy.) Babies are soooooo much fun!!!!

It is hard isn't it! I seem to start gaining weight the minute implantation occurs!! But I truly think it is either genetic or has to do with your weight when you start your pregnancy.

Just because you weigh more doesn't mean you are less fit at this point though.

You will end up backsliding fitness wise as your pregnancy progresses, but by forming good eating habits now and exercise habits....you will be putting into place a quick recovery to your former fitness levels post pregnancy.

So...it never TRULY goes to "pot" but you will have to drop back some. Muscles and other systems in your body have "memory" and you won't have to work as hard to get back to your former fitness level.

Hope this makes sense. All part of the price we pay for sweet babies!

Hi,

I can completely relate to your anxiety about early weight-gain and losing your fitness. Are you sure that the 5 pounds is actually extra weight gain? I ask this because I just had a pregnancy miscarry at 11 weeks. In those 11 weeks I gained at *least* five pounds, despite eating clean and continuing to exercise regularly. In the week following my miscarriage I lost 6 pounds, without dieting. The fetus had stopped growing at 8 1/2 weeks, so the 6 pounds certainly wasn't the baby or the placenta!! It was all extra stuff that my body had accumulated or created, in an attempt to build a nice soft nest for the baby. I know the pregnancy literature makes it sound like you shouldn't gain a pound before the fifth month, but that is a load of hooey. Yes, the baby itself doesn't contribute to your weight gain until about the the fourth or fifth month, but IMO, your body will increase in mass just because it's been turned into an incubator. I suspect much of your weight gain is water retention, increased blood volume, and full bowels.

All the best,
Sandra

Thanks everyone for your understanding. I have decided to keep a food journal just to be safe. I found out today that I am 6 weeks pregnant. I must admit the excitement has not really set in yet. I do plan to keep up with my exercise routine as much as possible. I felt like real crap two weeks ago, but am feeling fine now. I did have to battle that feeling of a hole burning through my stomach and perhaps I did nibble a bit more to combat this.

Thanks again for the support.
