Glucosamine Sulfate or Glucosamine Hydrochloride? Calcium--what form?

I have been using Glucosamine/Chondroitin now for a couple years and have had some relief from osteoarthritis in my knees. I am curious if there are any experts here who might know what is the most effective way to take Glucosamine/Chondroitin (liquid? capsule? tablet?) and whether it's better as a sulfate compound or hydrochloride compound. I am pretty confident of the dosage from studies I have read about: 1500/600 per day. Also, are there any experts here on Calcium? I have heard that Calcium carbonate is not very good. Is that right?

Sorry, I don't know the answer, but I sure would like to know. I'm confident though that someone here will have an answer - it's quite the educated crowd.

I take Glucosamine Chondroitin with MSM (along with my multi-vitamin) and it is a capsul (with a powder inside).

RE: Glucosamine Sulfate or Glucosamine Hydrochloride? C...

My reading has suggested 1500/1200 per day of glucosamine/chondroiten. I haven't found anything that recommends one form over another. Miriam Nelson recommends having blood sugar levels checked frequently if you do take them because they might affect insulin levels. You might find her book "Strong Women and Men Beat Arthritis" helpful. The exercise recommendations are pretty basic, but the nutritional info was helpful for me.

Calcium citrate is the preferred form of calcium (better absorption) but some people have stomach distress with it. Taking it with food or just after a meal is recommended. Do not take a multi-vitamin and the calcium at the same time (in case you didn't already know).

I know sulfate is better, but I couldn't tell you why off the top of my head, although I'm sure I've read it several places. Monday morning, sorry....

Thanks, Debra.

Why should I be worried about my insulin levels?
