Glucosamine/Chonodroitin-For the Knee

Has anyone tried this stuff and how long did it take you to notice results? If it worked for you, I've been told it could be quite effective. Thanks for any responses.

I take it and notice a big difference when I take it regularly. I get lazy and only take it regularly when my knees start acting up then I slack off when I feel better. My sports med doctor highly recommended it.

My ortho doc recommended Ostio-Byflex he said it's the only one out there that is regulated. I bought it and used the whole bottle and it seemed to work.

Thanks, I read about the product in Runners World magazine and I saw it at the Target today, my knees have been a little out of wack. I think I'll go back and pick it up this afternoon. Thank you so much for the information. I wonder if you need to take it as part of your regular regimen, you know like with your regular vitamins?

It's a very commom supplement for people with arthritis. I actually had my dog on it when she got severe arthritis & it did seem to provide some relief.

There are a few other supplements out there that lubricate the joints--MSM is a pretty popular one, as is vitamin E (but this you have to be careful with, too much does have side effects). You can take all 3 at the same time, there aren't any inter-mixing problems.

Actually I was thinking about this stuff the other day and looked it up.

You might not want to take this if you are a vegetarian or vegan, because glucosamine is made from animals such as crab, lobster and shrimp. Chondroitin, another supplement that is often taken with glucosamine, is made from animal cartilage, such as shark.

I think I will try the brand that was suggested in this forum.

I tried a brand that was on sale at Stop and Shop and it did not work for my cracking knees.

The doctor said that taking this suppliment cannot hurt you in any way, so that is good! :)

Good luck all!

:)

I take the Costco Tri-Flex brand of some sort. It generally takes 3 weeks on the supplement before you notice any change, so give it a little time before you stop! (It also lasts about 3 weeks after you stop taking the supplement, so skipping a day or two here and there won't end up making a huge difference.)

Wow, thanks for all the information. This is good to know. It's also good to know that taking a combination of these supplements is safe. Thanks for the timeline too.

I drink Joint Juice Plus. It works a lot better than anything else I've tried out there. It took me only 3 days to notice relief. I have arthritis and a knee problem. You only drink one can a day. I don't know why Joint Juice is not mentioned very much?

Lisa :)

It can't hurt to take this suppliment, so I would say to all--give it a try and see if it works for you! :)

I know it takes a month to work, so give it time is what I hear.

My issue was that I was taking it for my cracking knees (no pain, thank goodness) and I took one brand for one month and did not notice any difference.

If I was having knee pain from the start, maybe I would have noticed relief. Not sure if this suppliment is going to help me with my cracking knees??? Will the cracking ever stop???

Maybe not. I can deal with the cracking, as long as I never have pain!

:)

I am going to try the other brand that was mentioned earlier in this forum. Thanks to all.

:)

Actually, you can get vegan glucosamine (www.veganessentials.com carry a couple different brands. And they also carry a flax meal with added glucosamine and other joint factors, like MSM, that would be good to add to the diet). I don't know of any vegan source of chondroitin.

If you have Sam's Club near you, they have a case of 24. I've found them at Wal-Mart but they sell a 4 pack. If you go to Wal-Mart, they're in the vitamin section. I don't know if Wal-Mart carries JJ Plus though. You could order JJ online as well but it's a little pricier than Sam's Club. It was recommended by Dani here on this forum. There's Joint Juice with just glucosamine and there's Joint Juice Plus which is both glucosamine and chondrin. Plus works much better for me. It's better to take glucosamine in a liquid form because it goes right into your bloodstream. If you take capsules or a pill-form, it will take a couple of weeks before your body absorbs enough of it to feel the difference. Hope this helps.

It did not work me and it also greatly interferes with the birth control pill, FYI. The thing that worked for me was Flax Seed oil, or anything with Omega-3. I am vegetarian or I would take Fish oil.

Try doing squats more narrow to strengthen the teardrop portion of your quads and the inside portions of your knees. That will hopefully prevent the cracking from leading to grinding and pain!

I take a liquid form of Glocosamine/Chondroitin with MSM and it absolutely works on helping my very noisy knees from aching after workouts that require a lot of knee bends.

I ran out of the liquid form and started taking a pill for a while and felt that it wasn't effective.

I would say try a few brands before giving up if the first one doesn't work.

These pills can be very expensive!!!!!!!

I was looking today at Stop and Shop. :(

After some searching I can see no evidence of glucosamine interfering with birth control pills but perhaps I have missed something.

I do buy some of my supplements from Puritan Pride for very reasonable prices but I do not know if they carry any of the specific brands. I have glucosamine before, both in liquid (which tastes terrible) and pill format and have had good luck with both. My cranky knees have convinced me that I need to go on it again.
