Gizmo's Broken Jaw Update

dogs2birds

Cathlete
Well, Gizmo had his appointment at the vet today to be put under so they could take a look at what was going on with his jaw and whether or not he'd need surgery. He did. They said that there was dead bone and dead teeth in there. Our vet said that his jaw was STILL BROKEN and moved around (we didn't even notice - I feel like a bad mom). She said that she didn't see any signs that it had been fixed before! Unbelievable! And that poor little guy just played and played and loved and loved and you'd never know he was in pain. Poor baby probably just thinks pain is a way of life so he lived with it.

His mouth is taped shut (new pics of him on my Picture Trail album - Dogs, Hair, etc.) and will be for 2 weeks. He can open his mouth a teeny bit and we have to shovel in canned food mixed with water so it's really runny. I feel so bad for him. He whimpered all the way home from the vet. He's sleeping on DH's lap now.

The bill was not as bad as I thought it would be - $300. But since we're leaving for my Dad's on Thursday Gizmo will need to be boarded at the boarding facility next door to our vet and I feel awful leaving him. I wouldn't expect a house sitter to watch him in addition to our others. Anyway, I'm sure that boarding won't be cheap as he will require such specialized care. But they're the ones to do it. And of course he's worth every single penny.

I'm a little upset with our Shelter's vet. But what do you do? I was on their board until recently and will be sure to pass this info on to a couple of board members. I'm still pretty involved. I'm not sure what happened, but it's worth mentioning if you ask me. I think God was watching over Gizmo since the Shelter's vet is out sick and wasn't able to treat Gizmo.

So there you have it. Heartbreaking if you ask me. This little fella has done nothing to deserve all this. The only "good" that has come out of it is that the only reason we ended up with him is because of his abuse and the Shelter staff called us to take him as they felt we would be a very special home for him and they believed he needed that after his rough start in life.

Thanks once again for listening. Sorry it's so long!!!

One way to look at it, atleast he is on the road to recovery! Its so heartbreaking when you can't explain to them why this is happening. If you knew they understood, it would make it so much easier.

Thats a pretty good vet bill.I can't even imagine what that would cost around here!

I think you should mention it to someone, make sure they know that you know. Would have been nice if they told you.

Best of luck with the little guy.

He is such a lucky dog to have you to love and care for him. It brings tears to my eyes. I just don't understand how people can be so cruel. Especialy in Gizmo's case. He is just a puppy. It's not like he is mean or vicious. (Even if a dog is vicious, abuse should never be an option) We just had a horrible abuse case in our area and I was watching the news tonight and the poor thing died last night. She was found a little over a week ago and had been burned. When the news first aired her story, she looked like she would make it, but apparently complications from the treatments and surgery set in. I'll never understand what compells someone to do something like that. The news said that there is an $11,000 reward out to find who did this so maybe some justice will come of it.

Thank you for being such a caring person. I wish a speedy recovery to Gizmo.

Jean - what a terrible story. So sad. :(

I forgot to mention a good thing that happened at the vet. When we took Amber and Gizmo to the vet last Friday, they thanked us so much for letting Amber donate her blood last Wednesday, as she saved a Pug and the little Pug was doing so much better.

Well, today there was a thank you card and a big chocolate chip cookie for us at the vet's office from the owner of the Pug, Summer. The cookie, from our local cookie store said "Thanks for being a Lifesaver" and had frosting like the Lifesaver candy on it. The card was from the Summer's owner thanking us for allowing Amber to donate blood and save Summer's life. Summer finally got to go home today. Amber will get extra doggie biscuits tomorrow when the other doggies aren't looking. :)

Susan - bless you, Gizmo and the rest of your crew. You are truly an inspiration. A lot of people talk about how they would like to do things for animals, you're out there doing them.

I just love reading about how much you care for your pets. Poor little Gizmo. Give him a big hug for me! Animals, and especially dogs, are simply amazing. So many go through so much, and yet they are simply waiting to be loved.

Susan....god bless you. I wish I could just reach thru and hug you and Gizmo!! I remember my dogs and those "lampshades"...they always seemed to crash into something...:)...Gizmo has gone thru ALOT to find the perfect family...My prayers for his speedy recovery and I am sure he will be well cared for until you guys get home...:)

More {{{hugs}}} for you Susan. Gizmo might be a little uncomfortable now, but just think how great he is going to feel when he's all better!!! He'll probably play and bounce around like never before!!

You are a wonderful "doggie mom"!

Here are lots of hugs and healing vibes sent to Gizmo!

If he's been so sweet and playful while still having a broken jaw and complications, just wait for the mayhem after he's feeling 100%! ;-)

Thanks for all of your kind words! You all make me want to cry.

Gizmo seems to feel a lot better today. Must be all your hugs, prayers and well wishes. Thanks so much!!! He'll probably start to feel better than he ever has in his little life before long. Yay!!! :)

Jes - thanks. After 43 years of curls (well, I did have stick straight hair from about 5 yrs. old - 4th grade for some odd reason) I'm finally trying to learn to embrace my curls. :p

I just checked out Gizmo's photos, and with that E collar on, he reminds me of the RCA dog (though the RCA dogs "collar" wasn't a collar, but a old-fashioned record player 'cone'....and he wasn't wearing it!)

Susan, you're an EXCELLENT pookie mom! My goodness, I hate to think what would've happened to poor Gizmo had you not come along. You're the best thing that ever happened to that little guy.:+ He looks adorable in the Elizabethan collar!

I had a similar experience with a vet. It shakes you to your core, doesn't it? This was a guy I worked for so it was a tense and difficult situation. I came to realize that he was utterly negligent in the care of my pet (my beloved Siegfreid..the little guy in my picture trail). It's a very long story and I won't bore you with it, but we took him to 2 different vets and had them both examine our dog and review the records, and they both arrived at the same conclusion...my vet...my BOSS...had been negligent in the care of my pet. It was a terrible day for me. Needless to say, I quit that job immediately and took my pets elsewhere.

I'll keep little Gizmo in my prayers.

Susan,
Your family, animals and all, are really amazing! You remind me of my mom and dad who adopt every stray cat and my cousin whose partner works for an animal shelter-they had 5 dogs at their most, but unfortunately lost one this past Christmas. They also rescue afghans, which are just a delightful breed!
Best luck to this little guy on a speedy recovery and I just know that what goes around comes around and can't wait until the poor excuse for humans that did this to him get theirsx(

On a much happier note I just looked at your Mexico pics and you look great! I love the bathing suit and was wondering where you got it?
:) :)

Gosh, I just can't say enough how sweet you all are! And Michele, you're so thoughtful in not wanting to bore everyone with your long story - unlike me! Hehehe. I'm sorry for what you went through though. How awful it must have been.

Mattea - thanks! I got that suit last year at Target. I'm always so shocked at the price of suits so I'm always looking for a bargain. :)

Aw Susan, poor little peanut...he is sooo adorable. I know you have probably told us before, but I must have missed it: What kind of dog is he?? I really hate those collar things....we laugh everytime one winds up in one....they tend to walk into walls in stuff, cause they don't realize where they end, and the wall begins!!

I feel so sorry for Gizmo... but he's now so lucky to have you to take care of him. We're such an animal-loving family, it just burns me up to think people can be so cruel to an innocent animal. But, thankfully, all that is behind him! And, BTW, I love your closing quote. It's so true.

I cannot believe his jaw was still broken. That makes me so sad. :( But I am so happy his surgery is done and he can heal and have a lifetime of fun with his new family. Yours dogs are so cute!! I love the picture of all 3 of them. I will say lots of prayers for a quick recovery!! :)
