Well, Gizmo had his appointment at the vet today to be put under so they could take a look at what was going on with his jaw and whether or not he'd need surgery. He did. They said that there was dead bone and dead teeth in there. Our vet said that his jaw was STILL BROKEN and moved around (we didn't even notice - I feel like a bad mom). She said that she didn't see any signs that it had been fixed before! Unbelievable! And that poor little guy just played and played and loved and loved and you'd never know he was in pain. Poor baby probably just thinks pain is a way of life so he lived with it.
His mouth is taped shut (new pics of him on my Picture Trail album - Dogs, Hair, etc.) and will be for 2 weeks. He can open his mouth a teeny bit and we have to shovel in canned food mixed with water so it's really runny. I feel so bad for him. He whimpered all the way home from the vet. He's sleeping on DH's lap now.
The bill was not as bad as I thought it would be - $300. But since we're leaving for my Dad's on Thursday Gizmo will need to be boarded at the boarding facility next door to our vet and I feel awful leaving him. I wouldn't expect a house sitter to watch him in addition to our others. Anyway, I'm sure that boarding won't be cheap as he will require such specialized care. But they're the ones to do it. And of course he's worth every single penny.
I'm a little upset with our Shelter's vet. But what do you do? I was on their board until recently and will be sure to pass this info on to a couple of board members. I'm still pretty involved. I'm not sure what happened, but it's worth mentioning if you ask me. I think God was watching over Gizmo since the Shelter's vet is out sick and wasn't able to treat Gizmo.
So there you have it. Heartbreaking if you ask me. This little fella has done nothing to deserve all this. The only "good" that has come out of it is that the only reason we ended up with him is because of his abuse and the Shelter staff called us to take him as they felt we would be a very special home for him and they believed he needed that after his rough start in life.
Thanks once again for listening. Sorry it's so long!!!
