Getting the most out of your workouts

Teaching someone else how to workout is the best way to improve your own workouts, I've found out. When I was studying for my ACE PT test, I became more aware of my form, so that improved my strength training.

Then, when I began to teach classes myself, and later to take the Y's Group Fitness Instructor classes, I became more aware of putting my all into my cardio workouts. You learn to use "strong" arms, and teach 150% to get 75% out of your instructees.

Now, you DON'T have to teach to improve your form, just be aware of what you're doing and don't do your Cathe (or whatever) tapes on autopilot. Watch Cathe and her crew, and mimic their moves.

For what it's worth, take it or leave it.

Just Do It! :7 ...and give it your all!

Honeybunch, I agree whole heartedly! I often find myself "pretending" I'm right there with Cathe and the crew and giving her my all. I find if I go on auto pilot I screw up!;-) I must stay focused!! Susan

Good advice. I imagine sometimes that I am trying out to be in one of Cathe's videos and therefore focus on every move. It really helps!

May God you always a sunbeam to warm you... a moonbeam to charm you...& a sheltering angel, so nothing can harm you ;) :D

HB,
Did you get the PT certif first, then learn to teach classes? That's what I might end up doing. Does it make a big difference which certif you have, in other words if you have the PT cert, then decide to do group instruc. or vice versa?

Anyway I'm reading the book first, then I plan on doing the workbook exercises (answer the questions on each chapter) then to take the sample test.

One thing at a time.

I decided to become a PT first, then the my boss (the minister at the church where I work) decided she wanted me to teach an aerobics class AFTER I got my certification. I got started working with Deb H and her Heart Smart company.

Then I got hooked up with the Y and my clients were slow in getting assigned to me, so I decided to get certified as a group instructor so I could get more exposure there and get clients that way. I'm going to get the Y and the ACE GFI certification at the same time, using the Y for my practical training, plus my own experience teaching at the church.

Just Do It! :)

Likes2bfit (sp?) :) I do the exact same thing! It works on days when I don't really want to do cardio - I pretend that at any moment the cameras will focus on me or that there's an audience watching. Sounds crazy but it helps me get more into the workout and really feel like I've burned some fat calories! And of course my performance was excellent and Cathe has invited to return in two days for the second phase of try-outs! :p :7 Got to keep myself motivated, you know! :)

Can anyone tell me how to gt information on getting certified. I really would like to do this next year. I am in the middle of my MS right now so I need to wait. Is it hard to do? I did not do very good in science classes in college but I am always reading up on fitness and have workout for years. I think it would be great to help other people make their goals. Please help if you can. Thanks!
