Getting Started

Iam wondering if I could get some advice about getting started. Iam ready to start excercising again would like to use the Cathe tapes. Im wondering if they will be too hard for a beginner. Also which ones would be the best to start with? I am particularly interested in the step aerobics. If anyone out there can give me some advice as to a few tapes to buy first and any tips for getting started I would really appreciate it.

Hi Alison!

Welcome!! I started with "MegaStepBlast" and the "How To Get In Shape For Your Wedding"(even though I have been married 28 years!

).I was brand new to Step other then some oldies from years back that I never liked. I picked the routines up fairly easy. There will be a few moves here and there which you will probably have to work on a few times, but it WILL come. Cathe is an excellent instructor and you should have no problem. They are both fun tapes. I have 12 Cathe tapes and there is not one that I have not liked yet. Also, keep in mind that you get a discount if you order more then just one tape. We LOVE to spend other people's $$!!! I also have to add that Maximum Intensity Strength (also know as MIS) is great. I know you are interested in STEP but if you decide to try strength training it is a super tape. Let us know what you decide! DebbieH

Hiya Alison

I started stepping years ago with this ancient tape Called "Buns of Steel 7 the step workout", or something like that. It's a Tamilee Webb video. It's fairly cheesy, but for an absolute beginner, which I was, it eased me into stepping and taught me the basics. Shortly thereafter my sister introduced me to Cathe's tapes. I started with Step Heat(took me about 2 months to get it down pat) and from there it was easy. After you learn one Cathe tape, the rest just get easier and easier to learn. (Though not easier to do!) As Debbie mentioned, How to Get In Shape For Your Wedding is also said to be a good one for beginners, but I don't know personally since it's the only Cathe tape I don't have.

Oh, one more thing, be parient with yourself. Step was really really hard for me to learn as I know it is for many people, but once I did manage to learn it, I was addicted! It just takes time for the body to learn a new skill.

Good Luck & Happy Stepping!

I'm with Debbie

I agree that How to Get in Shape for Your Wedding and Mega Step Blast (this was my first Cathe tape) would be good to start with...the choreography in both isn't too complex and yet you still feel worked out when you're done.

You then might consider Step Heat, Step Jam, and Step Max which are somewhat more challenging but still manageable.

Cathe is exceptional (IMO) when it comes to cueing so catching on to these tapes should be no problem.

Good luck and enjoy the workouts!!

modifications

Don't hesitate to modify! Lots of the videos can be broken into shorter workouts. Use a lower step or even do the moves on the floor behind your step if things get too intense or complicated. Go light on the weights during the strength workouts. Challenge yourself & don't worry about the weight that Cathe's using. I often do the leg work using body weight only.

I'm not suggesting that Cathe's tapes aren't challenging, but her cueing & form are awesome so give it a go if you're comfortable modifying.

Thank you

I just wanted to thank everyone that gave me advice! I got both Mega Step Blast and the wedding video. I just finished my first workout with Mega Step Blast and even though Im out of shape I was able to complete it by modifying. It was great!! The tape was awesome and I forgot how much I enjoy doing step. I really appreciate all the advice ..you all are wonderful :)

Alison!

Sooo glad you liked Mega Step Blast. We knew you would. We'll just add another body to the "Cathe-Addicts"!!
