getting sick a lot

I can't believe I'm sick again! The second time this month and since last fall - the 5th time. I feel like I'm always struggling with colds & the flu! Whenever my kids get sick - I get sick! Its crazy! And, whenever I get sick - I have to take time off from working out - it drives me crazy!

I think I'm doing everything I'm suppose to - I eay an extremely healthy diet - I exercise but maybe I'm doing too much. A career, young kids, getting up really early to exercise - maybe not enough sleep? But if I don't get up early to exercise, then there will be no time left at the end of the day! HELP!!!x(

Oh Lynne I hear you on this one! So much to do so little time Ha! I get up at 5:30 a.m. every morning to hit the big NYC for work. All I can suggest is to take a multi-vitamin (if you aren't already) & to alternate high intensity w/low intensity days. Or do 2 total body workouts & sneak in 1 high intensity cardio. Maybe this way you won't feel so stressed & feel you have to work out every nite for 6 days straight. I suffer from sinus infections especially this time of the year & have to cut out a lot of the cardio or else I'll come down w/another infection. Go figure! I mostly intensify my strength training & do 1-2 cardios per week. HTH, Kathy:D

What time are you going to bed at night & getting up in the morning? Are you taking a multivitamin? Did you get a flu shot this year? I get up at 5AM but I go to bed at 9:00--9:30. Now, granted, my child is self-sufficient now (18) I still do a lot of stuff for/with her. But I'm probably not doing as much as a mom with younger kids.

How many kids do you have? Which actually has no bearing on your "illness factor," just being nosy. LOL

Why are you taking time off from working out while you are sick? Are you that sick? If you are getting so sick that you can't work out--you may want to visit your doctor. There may be underlying issues that you aren't aware of.

Hope that helps.

I have two kids - aged 4 and 2. I try to get to bed at 9:30pm but not always - I usually take about an hour before I actually fall asleep. And, yes I take time off working out when I'm sick because my doctor tells me to - plus I just don't have the energy when I'm running a fever ( like today ) I go to work with a 100 degree temperature and barley make it through - when I get home - I do dinner, baths and play with the kids and then pass out!

I do take a multi- vitamin ( centrum) & I'm just really frustrated. My four year old gets little bugs a lot (he's at that age - first year in a kindergarten program) and everytime he gets sick - I get sicker!! Twice this winter, I've been put on anti-biotics for strep throat. my doctor says i'm just run down - well DUH - but what do I do to get caught up?!? Should I be working out with a fever?

No, you definetly should not work out when you have a fever. Maybe you should try taking a few weeks off--not just until you feel better but a few weeks after you feel better. I know when I've had injuries that if I take considerable time off after I am healed, I come back with more "umpf."

If you have been to the doctor & he feels you are run down, he is probably right. 2 LITTLE ones will wear you out. Take some time to recooperate & get yourself good & well & then go back to it.

Hope you start feeling better soon.

Stress--whether the good kind from exercise, emotional stress, physical stresses such as not getting enough rest or sleep, or other kinds--can definitely weaken your immune system. You should look at everything that's going on in your life and figure out what stresses you can reduce.

Exercise-wise, maybe taking up some more restorative types of activities, like yoga (Hatha).

Hi Lynne! Absolutely do NOT work out with a fever; never! Get as much bed rest as you can. I used to get sick a lot too b/c my son was sick then my husband would get sick a terrible cycle; the germs are all in the house & there's really nothing you can do about it. All I can say is the kids get bigger & you start to have more free time for yourself. It does get better. Just do what you can on the days when your feeling up to working out. Take care, Kathy:D

Lynne,

You have gotten some wonderful responses already. In addition to what the other ladies have said, I would suggest taking additional vitamins, nminerals, and herbs when you are sick and when you notice that one of your children is sick. When I'm feeling under the weather I increase my daily doses of B vitamins (for energy production and stress release), vitamin C, and Zinc. I also start taking echinachea to help ward off colds and flus (can be taken for up to 2 weeks on a daily basis).

I work at an elementary school one day/week and a product I swear by is Airborne. It is an effervescant tablet that you drop in hot or cold water. It contains lots of vitamins and herbs with cold fighting properties. It has a orangy/gingery taste, not wonderful but not bad either. You can get this at Trader Joes or at most drugstores.

And always, REST, REST, REST!!!
