getting ready to run - opinions please

Hi! All.
I've decided that I want to become a runner!! I've gotten such good advice from so many of you here that before I start, I have a question about shoes. I've been to several of the running websites many of you have recommended and have learned so much - especially about starting out and going slow.

My question before I lose you - I have a pair of New Balance cross trainers (the 620's) that I love. Would it be okay to start out on my running journey using these. I plan to use the training schedule from runners world where for the first two weeks, alternate 60 seconds of running with recovery and gradually build up.

I am prone to knee discomfort at times - was having some issue with spinning but know all seems fine.

I will either be running on I guess asphalt or maybe the track at my local school.

I truly appreciate and respect your very knowledgable opinions. I don't want to risk injury and spending the $$ for running shoes is doable - just hoped to put it off a few months as I just bought spinning shoes.

I am new to running myself...2 months in and have been on a treadmill. I am about to run outdoors for the first time today!!! I was told even CHEAP running shoes are better than crosstrainers for runners. I bought myself a pair of $25.00 Adidas running sneakers at Costco and have seen running shoes for even a little less than that!

HTH!:)

I would NOT run in crosstrainers, especially will some knee issues. If you happen to have one of those running shoe stores where they can watch you run and recommend a shoe that would be great, otherwise I'd go to a running shoes store and talk to the staff and hopefully get the right shoe for you. There is also a Runners Check in here in the Check-in's & Challenges...come on over...:)

Like Wendy, said, I also suggest a pair of running sneakers, ESPECIALLY if you already have knee concerns. Just look at it this way....if for some reason, running doesn't work for you, you can use the running sneakers while weight training, or elliptical, or biking, or walking.

p.s. GOOD LUCK.....KEEP US POSTED ON YOUR PROGRESS!

Thank you all so much. :)

Running shoes it will be. There is a store that specializes in running not far from where I live. I will go there are have them fit me.

I am really wanting this to work.
Will keep you posted.
Thanks again

I only run in nike shox. I absolutely love them. I tried cheaper running shoes and my knees hurt and I got blisters. Since having the shox, I have had no problems. Make sure you leave enough toe room in your shoes also. so many people get there running shoes to fit like any normal shoe would and that is a big mistake. Usually they recommend going up a half size with running shoes . hope this helps!

When I first started running, I hate to admit that I used my crosstrainers. Finally, when I decided that I would be running on a regular basis I went out and bought some New Balance running shoes and I can't even tell you the difference it made. I will never run without running shoes again!

Hi!

I just started running about 4 months ago, and I had the same knee problem. It used to hurt a lot when I went to Spinning, and hurt about halfway through my runs. After some research, I decided to buy Brooks Adrenaline sneakers. They were sort of expensive, like $90, but it was so worth it. They are amazing, it feels like you are running on air. And I have not had an ounce of knee pain since. Love them!!

Have fun running! I always find it helps to be listening to some good music while I run.
