Getting better at Kickboxing

Hi all,

I have KPC and 4 Ds. I was never that great with my form on kickboxing and didn't feel like I got the upper body, hips and waist involved like I was supposed too, until now. I decided to get the Kickboxing for Dummies DVD, practiced the moves with that and I have gotten much better on my form. So now I include one or two kickboxing workouts a week for my cardio. Yesterday I did a combo of the 4 D kickbox and some of KPC. I am feeling it all over today and more in my mid and upper body. I am looking forward to doing the whole KPC workout soon. It is great cardio, fairly low impact and easy enough to modify to low inpact and it works the whole body. I have a WalkVest by Debbie Rocker and sometimes I wear that with 4 lbs in it too.

Cinday,

Congrats on your KB improvements...I am going to assume you mean KB for Dummies by Keli Roberts, I have it, as well, it is great to focus on form.

Form is critical in all forms of exercise, especially KB, because of the pivoting and twisting moves. I always go slower than Cathe and crew on her KB tapes for two reasons...

1) Because I'm slow to begin with

2) Because when I try to keep up, I sacrifice on form, and I have learned through trial and error (mostly error), form must come first!!

Keep up the great work on the Kick Box!

You know, this is something I'd really love to see at one of Cathe's RTs--an instructional class (NOT an exercise class) on KB form. I took karate for a couple of years in my 20s, & I think I know proper form, but I'm sure I'm not using it. :p There are certain moves, like the side kick & roundhouse, that are so tough to get--I don't have trouble w/the kick itself, but I'm pretty certain I don't post or chamber correctly so the kick is ending up in the wrong place.

Anyway, just a thought, sorry to hijack your thread. :)

Totally agree with you on that one, Laura! I've only ever done Tae Bo a few times and then Cathe's workouts but I really enjoy kickboxing. I know I'm doing the kicks wrong, I can feel it, but I swear I won't be able to "get it" until I see myself in the mirror and can actually ask a person questions.

Cindy, cool job on working on your form with kickboxing! It's a really fun way to vent, if you ask me!!

Slower movements

Hi,

Yes, I got the Keli Roberts KB for Dummies and even that is intense for me when I use proper form.

I'm glad to hear you so slower than Cathe, I have to do that too or my form really gets sloppy. It's good to know I'm not the only one.

Instructional class

Hi Lauramax,

You didn't hijack the thread at all you make a
good point on the instructional class or even if Cathe would include a detailed kickbox instruction on a DVD.
I feel the same way about my form on the kicks.
I have the same concerns about the different types of kicks and doing the chamber.
I hope that in time I'll get the pivots down a little better too, I really feel those during
the workout and the next day. I'll continue to go at my own pace with it because when
Cathe goes faster and I try to speed up too, my form get sloppy.
