Get your B12 levels checked!!!

For the last couple of months, I have noticed increased fatigue and trouble concentrating at times, and just wrote it off to all the fuss over the holidays and trying to get my mother settled into the nursing home.

When I started to become a little more concerned was when I could actually feel myself falling asleep while driving in the middle of the day, and after a good 7-8 hours of sleep a night. I immediately went to see my doctor, who ordered some lab work to have my B12 level checked. I am supposed to be between 500-900, my level was 211!!! She immediately gave me a shot of B12, and has me taking 1000 mcg of B12 daily, and I haven't had this much energy in a long while. Never in my wildest dreams did I think this could be the case.

It's a good idea to have this checked out!!

Thanks Jerry- I think I really will. I have felt unmotivated for several weeks, feeling tired and dizzy and even somewhat depressed. I wonder if mine are low.

jerry,

i am glad you got everything sorted out. i knwo that when i am feeling "draggy" i take b-12. i get a brand called solray. it's 1000mcg each and you let it dissolve under your tongue. i usually get my energy back soon after. i recommend it.

Clarissa,

Sounds like the way I have been feeling for a while. It certainly wouldn't hurt to have it checked!

A few years ago, I felt really tired and weak all the time. I thought I was low on iron. I went to the doctor and she told me that I was B12 deficient. She told me just to take a multi-vitamin which I did and I have been fine ever since. Being a vegetarian, I decided to sometimes take a B12 supplement. You get B12 mainly from meat and therefore vegetarians need to be careful. I never thought that being deficient in B12 would make me the feel the way I did. Wow!!!

Thanks for writing this - I've always had an energy level problem, and do take a Vit B complex everyday, plus a multiple, but the combined Vit B is only 150 mcg. I'm going to buy extra Vit B12 today!

I highly recommend using Methylcobalamin rather than the usual Cyanacobalamin. It is more potent (Cyana... breaks down into Methyl... in the body, so taking Methyl.. directly makes it more effective).

I used it to reverse diabetic neuropathy in one of my cats (a condition the vet said was irreversible).

I use the spray (www.vegenessentials.com carries it), but have used the pills (Xobaline from www.lifelinknet.com , which is what I used with Scooter).

Kathryn,

Awfully nice to "see" you again here! Glad your computer was released from captivity at the repair place--

Chocolate IS the answer, regardless of the question.

Jerry, I'm glad you're feeling better. I'm curious: was your diet lacking in poultry, fish and dairy products? Or was the problem that your body wasn't properly absorbing the B12 from your food? Did your doc say which it was?

Hi Nancy,

My doctor didn't specify the reason. From my own research, I would say lack of fish in my diet would be a big contributor, as I consume plenty of poultry and dairy. I've made it a point to include more seafood in my diet this year.

I want to add that your diet may have been fine, but you may have trouble absorbing b12 from food. This is often the case. I have a friend who must get a b12 shot every two weeks since she cannot get it from food or pills. I've started taking a liquid, sublingual form of it that is supposed to be very absorbable. I've also read about a b12 patch.

Nope, it's still there! (they are waiting for a new keyboard to come in...but aren't charging me for the installation because they've had my computer for so long!).

I just have to come into the office for work (sorry for using a 'four letter word' on the forums, LOL!) since the semester started, so I check in when I'm here!

Hi TeTe!

I actually have the spray by a brand called Pure Advantage. I got it at my health food store but it's also on vegan essentials. It's probably the same one Kathryn uses.

To the OP, again I want to reiterate in case you missed it that low levels of b12 are most often caused by absorption problems rather than dietary deficiencies. Since you aren't a vegetarian or vegan, this applies to you even more. If I were you I'd find out if it is an absorption problem. Good luck.

I just bought some dissolving B-12's, thanks for the heads up, energy is a funny thing, the ups and downs, so why not give it a try?:7
