Gestational Diabetes

My wife has been diagnosed with gestational diabetes and she seems to be taking it pretty hard. And, rightfully so, I suppose. I am trying to be supportive, but I am an "information" person. Without it, I just feel lost and my support is lessened.
At her sugar tests with the physician, she was highest after fasting (20 points too high) and right after meals (2 points too high). After a consult with a diabetes specialist, we have begun a diet to combat the high levels. Primarily, lower (contolled) carbohydrates.
Oddly enough, her blood sugar levels are acceptable during the day. In the morning (prior to eating), her levels are highest, or after fasting. Today was her first "self test" and registered 99. She ate breakfast and tested and hour later which was high also. But, all subsequent tests during the day were "normal", even after meals. She believes a test three hours after a meal would be high also, due to the long period after eating.
Why would lack of eating cause blood sugar to elevate? How can we keep the levels lower other than diet and exercise...Timing? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would highly recommend that she consult with a nutritionist. In fact I'm surprised her Dr. did not automatically refer her to one. I have not had gestational diabetes with my 4 kids but I do know that it is standard practice in my Drs office to refer patients to a nutritionist if they are diagnosed. Also, 3 of my friends have had it and they were referred to a nutritionist as well. Just for an initial consultation and that should answer all her and your questions. Thankfully it almost always disappears after the baby is born.

Pregnancy is difficult enough without the complications of diabetes, isn't it? The good news is it almost always goes away shortyly after birth. Is it possible that your wife might have had undiagnosed diabetes prior to becoming pregnant?
Let introduce myself as a pharmacist--not a diabetes expert. I do help answer diabetes questions, but often refer to endocrinologist or diabetes educator with the more detailed questions. A blood sugar of 99 isn't very high, and I would not be concerned about it. The question that you ask about her sugars being high even before she eats is confusing. It might help you to know that your liver produces sugar for your body even if you don't eat. This is a confusing for many people with diabetes. It's as if your body works against you!
I agree with previous feedback that a nutritionist & a certified diabetes educator is a must for anyone with diabetes. They offer a wealth of information and typically are not limited by time as much as a MD.
Lastly, I applaud your concerns. I think it's so awesome that you are educating yourself in an effort to be more supportive to your wife and family. That is so wonderful. Your wife is lucky to have such a concerning husband. :) Merry Christmas!
