Gestation diabetes??

Good mornin' ladies... i was wondering if anyone had any knowledge about gestational diabetes(gb). my dh and i are considering having a 3rd baby and i am concerned about gb. i developed it with my 2nd but only because i have such big babies(9lbs. and 9lbs. 10 oz,) i did not gain a significant amount of weight with either boy. now i am scared that my odds are not only higher for getting it during this pregnancy but i can also develop it for life. has anyone ever had gb 2x and if so did it resolve itself after giving birth? thanks for any input

Mary, I've never had it - just wanted to offer some support. I honestly don't know much about it. I've heard a midwife say that it can be controlled by diet, but I really don't have much info on it. Maybe it couldn't be in all cases. I hope you get some answers. (((hugs)))

I always thought that gd went away after the baby was born. I had to be on a special diet for a month but after that I was fine.
Sorry I am of no help!!

I only had one pregnancy out of four with gestation diabetes however, I had a sister-in-law with four gestational diabetes pregnancies. Her first one she controlled by diet but the other 3 she had to give herself insulin shots. The diabetes vanished in all 4 cases after giving birth. Her youngest is 15 now and she has not had developed diabetes.

I know when I had it, I read so much about it. I remember reading that it did increase my risk later in life for diabetes, as did my family history, and other risk factors (my diet and exercise program, etc.). With diabetes not being something in my family and I keep up with a healthy weight and exercise, I am lead to believe my risks are low.

Good luck in making your decision!!!

thank you for your input...i know that there is no sure way to tell if i will get diabetes again but i would be sad if i did get it and i knew going into it that there was a chance. on the other hand i know that when i look at my little baby that i would never change a thing and he/she would be worth anything. i guess i will just pray about it. thank you ladies

I only had it once with my last pregnancy and it resolved itself right after birth. I was able to control it with diet alone during pregnancy. All is well and my son was born 8lb 2 oz.

I had gestational diabetes with my first and second pregnancy.I did not have it with my third. When I found out I was preg. again, I started to follow the diet I had been on for the first 2. You just have to be careful about what you eat...I also have had no trouble afterward..Good luck to you. I know being pregnant carries all sorts of worries, at least it did for me...

gestational diabetes

Hi,

I had gestational diabetes with my first pregnancy. Diabetes runs very strongly in my family, so it was not a big surprise. I had to go on insulin and go in for lots of extra visits. My daughter came 2 weeks early and weighed 6 lbs 6 oz.

I wanted to avoid it a second time mainly because of the hassle of the extra appointments, blood sugar checks, and shots. I strictly followed the diet I had for baby #1 beginning a few months before the test and especially 5 weeks before. I passed the test with flying colors! My second baby was born 4 days ago, also two weeks early. He weighed 7 lbs 9 oz.

I think that next time I will work harder to follow the diet even after passing the test.

Some people are just made to have big babies, and some babies are just destined to be big. In my opinion fear of a big baby should not keep you from having another one. I think following the diet is a great idea.

(By the way, it resolved itself after birth.)

May God bless your decision!

Anna

Hi,

I had borderline gestational diabetes with my first DD and had to follow a pretty strict diet in order to not take insulin for my second DD. Gestational diabetes is just that - diabetes you have while pregnant. It does not last or stay with you after baby is born, BUT statistics say gives you a greater chance of developing Type 2 later in life. Diabetes is a hassle for sure, but there are far worse diseases to have! My husband's family is proof enough (my DH, FIL and niece all have Type 1) but life is good! :D If you want a third baby, I say go for it!!!! Just watch your diet closely ;)

Good Luck!
