"Garage sale" ideas

I have lots of stuff in my basement and around my house that I could gather up and have a garage sale to sell. I'll probably be a millionaire if it all goes ;) The problem is that I don't have a driveway to have it in!

I live on a busy street and I have front steps and a little garden in the front of my house but by no means is there enough room to keep it on my property without using the sidewalk. I don't think that I can do it on the sidewalk b/c that is city property.

Any ideas about how to pull this off without a driveway?

Christine :)

You could set up a table or two in the front yard and then have a series of items leading to the back yard where the rest of the loot will be sold. Ya know, hook them with the eye catching window display to lure them into the store. :D

Do you have a neighbor with a big garage that would like to go in on the sale with you?

Do you have a front porch? Turn it into a porch sale.

When I was a kid, we had a porch sale once. Some of the stuff was on the porch, and some was in the living room.

Just be warned that no matter what you set as the starting time, there will be antique hunters showing up earlier to see if there's anything worth buying.

RE:

No porch - just a narrow set of about 10 stairs.

No neighbor to share with, except the gal next door who has exactly the same situation as me!

Buuutttt....I do have a drive way that loops around into our back yard that I share with four neighbors (one of which wants to have one at the same time as me!).

Do people really walk around houses and stuff to shop garage sales? I thought that not being directly on the street would make it unsuccessful.

RE:

A lot of people advertise their sales in the paper in advance. In my neighborhood, you will see cars lining up on the street waiting for the sale to begin. The bigger the sale the more people want to come.

My mom and I have also had a lot of success making NEON signs and posting them at the nearby intersections. If you have street parking available, also put signs on your cars to alert all that traffic they would be wise to stop and spend!!

RE:

Make sure you put up lots of signs. Make sure you have a way to watch all your stuff as I have had stuff stolen before. I wish I was there. I love garage/yard sales. I had an ashtray sell for almost 60 bucks on ebay and I found it at a yard sale for .50 .:) I knew exactly what is was when I saw it and about p'd myself. Another great idea is to have your stuff premarked. It never fails though.........you will always have that someone that will try to talk you down.:)
