Fur-trimmed coats... eeouuww!

I just heard on the news yesterday that some investigators bought 25 fur-trimmed coats from various retailers... and when they tested the fur, 24 of them were.... dog or cat fur!!!! Yes, folks, unethical manufacturers in China and elsewhere are killing dogs, and cats, in barbaric ways and skinning them for use in coats. (Some of the dogs are not even fully dead yet!!!) I went on the Humane Society site to confirm this story, and it's happening. I told my daughters that I was going to grab a bunch of ladies, and go to the Mall with "Boycott Chinese-made garments" signs and protest... and of course they flipped out. But I'm seriously thinking I should do this, I'm just so outraged!!

I read an article similar to this, and while I am not condoning this at all, the dog fur is from an animal more like a fox called a racoon dog. A wild animal - not a house pet - but they are farmed like some other fur animals. I do not know about the cat fur.

Now, the reports I have seen about how racoon dogs are treated on these farms are horrific and I absolutely do not condone the wearing of their fur. I am very saddened to see that some department stores are turning a blind eye to this. I personally would not wear the fur of any animal slaughtered soley for their hide.

After watching that news program and reading an article on this outrageous practice, I am ready to boycott anything that is made in China. I'm with you delfin, I think it should be made *very* public. Send e-mails to everyone in your address book and get the word out however you can. The EU is proposing a ban on imports of dog and cat fur and so should the U.S. if they haven't already.

I try to limit buying anything made in China. It is certainly easier said than done. If the American consumer would buy less and spend more money buying from "labor friendly" sources, they just might still save some money. This is a very troubling story.

Strange that we care if it's a cat or a dog, but we don't care if it's a rabbit or a fox or a mink or a cow, etc. It's not like trapping methods and the slaughter of other animals is any less horrific.

ITA te-te. I too love cats and dogs, but in our culture they truly have all the luck! I do not wear the hide or fur of any animal killed for any reason. I don't understand how people can split hairs and condone/support cruelty towards some animals and affection towards others.

Dog, Cat, Fox, Rabbit, what's the difference?

People flip out about dogs and cats being killed for fur (as they should), but they see nothing wrong with anal electrocution of mink, or torturing foxes and other wildlife in leg-hold traps just for the sake of vanity.

>Strange that we care if it's a cat or a dog, but we don't

I care.
Boycott ALL fur!

I also do not understand why the pain of one animal is any worse than another. Foxs, minks ect are just as cute and fuzzy as dogs and cats:)

I am not saying that the pain of dogs and cats is worse than the pain of other animals... I personally don't care for any kind of fur. But the fact that these manufacturers deliberately deceived people by using dog and cat fur... and the fact that, in the west, dogs and cats are companion animals, and true family members, has me particularly outraged.
