Full Pyramid System ???????????

Hi Anna,
My familiarity with pyramiding in weightlifting is this:
if you start with light weight and high reps, and increase weight and lower the reps up to whatever heavy weight your target is, then come back down the same way.....this is a full pyramid. Doing "one side" of the pyramid is a half pyramid.
Example from my workouts:

full pyramid on side lateral shoulder machine:
60 lbs -- 10 reps.
65 lbs -- 9 reps.
70 lbs -- 8 reps.
75 lbs. -- 7 reps
80 lbs -- 6 reps.
85 lbs. -- 5 reps.
90 lbs. -- 4 reps.
95 lbs. -- 3 reps.
100 lbs. -- 2 reps.
105 lbs. -- 1 reps.
100 lbs. --2 reps.
95 lbs. -- 3 reps.
90 lbs. -- 4 reps.
85 lbs. -- 5 reps.
80 lbs. -- 6 reps.
75 lbs. -- 7 reps.
70 lbs. -- 8 reps.
65 lbs. -- 9 reps.
60 lbs. -- 10 reps.

If you started out and just did either high weight to low weight or just the low weight to high weight part then that's a half -pyramid.
According to Muscle and Fitness these are excellent for building size. More muscle fibers are recruited doing this.
Now having said all of this perhaps Cathe's has other ideas on what full pyramid is. Hopefully she'll tell us!! :)
Hi Cathe!! :)
Anyway hope this helped you Anna.

Hi Trevor,

Thanks for all your info. OMG, do you really lift 100 lbs in weight ????????????????????????????? I can barely lift 3lbs in weight when working out to Cathe (or anyone else for that matter). I think I am going to have to invest in the PS series before embarking on the new Pyramid tapes. I thought I could finally get some use out of my stability ball, which gathers dust, at the moment !

Anna

Anna,
Honestly, the Pure Strength Series is the one I would absolutely invest in. I bought it after I went through Body Max. My husband began doing PS also and it literally helped him get his running legs back ( PS Legs is very good). He now alternates between the PS and Slow and Heavy series. We are looking forward to the next batch of weight training vids!

Trevor,
Did I read you correcty: You do 19 sets of one exercise? I must say I've never seen that before. Do you do any other exercises when you do it?

Yea, that seems beyond what Cathe might be doing...maybe its a variation on that idea. Sounds good to me. Ready for a change. Trevors way we may only get 3 exercises. dmd

Anna, keep in mind Trevor has testosterone running through his system and we don't!!!!! This still is an incredible workout trevor, you really do this huh??? I'm curious also, what else you do when your done with this....whew!!!! Anna, keep at those 3 pounders and you'll be amazed, you will move up eventually. Shoulders are a tough area for me and I use 10 pound max on really good days mind you, usually 8# and this after working out for the past year. I still have wimpy shoulders in my opinion and would love a little of trev's muscle power to lift a little more!!!!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-14-02 AT 08:58PM (Est)[p]Hi ladies!!
I rarely do the entire pyramid. Usually I go up the front side of the pyramid and stop at the highest weight at 1 rep. My splits are back/bis on day 1, chest/tris on day 2, shoulders on day 3, and legs on day 4. Three days cardio, sometimes only two days since I have trouble holding my bodyweight at times and try to stay at 6ft/185# as my optimum. I work a pyramid in perhaps once a week on just one exercise and it is in addition to my regular work. I consider it something fun to do to break up the monotony of everyday lifting. You get a good pump from it and you all will love it believe me.
Happy lifting!
GO 24!!!!!

I guess it is 19 sets but remember they are small sets so it actually looks worse on paper than it really is in the gym. Especially after you do them for awhile. Also I rarely do the entire pyramid.

Don't worry about how much you are lifting. Just do it in a controlled ,relatively slow, manner and you will see results in your muscles and you will get stronger. Trust me!! :)
Also don't get the idea that I am some kind of strongman or anything. The machine weight equipment makes it easier to throw around more weight. I don't pyramid with free weights unless I have a very good spotter available. Muscle failure is very much attainable with pyramiding, thus making spotters very important.
GO 24!!!!

Who's 24?

Hope I'm not asking a stupid question (but it wouldn't be the first or last time). So who/what is 24?

Debra

RE: Who's 24?

Hey Debra!!
Number 24 is the Dupont Chevrolet Monte Carlo driven by Jeff Gordon in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. I am a huge fan and he's currently 6th in points with the season winding down so I am just showing my support by putting his number in my posts.
How are things with you girl?

This is AWESOME! My intro to Pyramids came from Body-for-Life. The BFL method is like the 1st half of your pyramid.

EX:
12 reps - 10#s
10 reps - 15#s
8 reps - 20#s
6 reps - 25#s (should not be able to do even one more rep here)
12 reps - 20#s
12 reps - 25#s (different exercise for same muscle group)

This is enough for lil ole me :O so can't imagine doing the entire pyramid! I have also heard that pyramiding enables you to increase your weights a lot sooner. Truth or myth?

Also, is the above pyramid an up or down pyramid?

thanks,
dee c.

RE: Who's 24?

I didn't think Number 24 was a Raven. Forgot about your Nascar passion. Bro-in-law is a fanatic (we can't figure out where his Swedish parents went wrong). He's an Earnhardt fan (bet I spelled that wrong). All loyalty seems to have been transferred to the son.

Are you getting any trail rides in? I'm doing great but my bike time is limited - miss it. Almost forgot to ask, have you been back to yoga???

I despise the Ravens so please never mention them again!! lol!! I am kidding!! :)
Also, I despise Dale Earnhardt Jr. too so please never mention him again!! ;-) Kidding again!! Tell your in-law to get with a winner and root for the number 24!!!!
I haven't ridden much this year.....it's very time consuming and I just havent had the time. I am so into lifting right now that I don't want to miss any of it.
I haven't been back to yoga as they switched the classes around and I cannot get to one right now with work the way it is.
What have you been up to?
Trevor :) :-jumpy
GO 24!!!!!!!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-16-02 AT 07:55AM (Est)[p]Hi Dee!!
Yeah that BFL is kind of like a pyramid except the reps jump around a bit and aren't as gradual.
I did the BFL weight thing for awhile and it just shredded me....I had a helluva time keeping my bodyweight up.
I don't know if pyramiding allows to to increase weight sooner....it is supposed to help build mass according to some things I have read. If you reach a sticking point in your attempts to increase weight get someone to spot you and try some negatives...these DO work as I have seen from experience.
Trevor :) :-jumpy
GO 24!!!!

RE: Who's 24?

Trevor- I always enjoyed your posts and thought you were a great guy until you said you liked Jeff Gordon!!!! PLEASE don't ever mention his name again. Go JR.!!!!!!! He is my main man, I am totally devoted!!! Have a nice day Trevor, I am smiling, and I hope you are too!!

RE: Who's 24?

OH GEEZ Lori!!! LOL!! Tell me, what happened to you that made you turn to the dark side and root for an Earnhardt?!! ;-)
I am kidding of course!
Trevor :)

Hi Trevor! Sorry for the delayed response but lost track of this thread somehow! I get behind with forum when I get too busy and the net gets too slow.

I would LOVE to have the problem of not being able to keep my weight up :O I do know what you are saying, though. We have friend that has to eat to maintain muscle or gets too thin too fast.

I am REALLY excited about the pyramiding on the new videos!!! I am pretty much doing all Cathe now instead of BFL workouts (still eating BFL) so will be nice to have her take on the pyramids :)
