Frustration

Cathlete
I have been working out with Cathe for years, and have been able to accept that low impact is a must for my 68 year old body but now I have a new problem with my right elbow (it’s actually the bone right above the back of the elbow) very sore and gets worse when I pick up 10-12-15 lbs. I have worked so hard to get to this point and I hate the thought of having to go back to light weights. If anyone has any suggestions – browsing internet I have found tennis or golf elbow, but I don’t think that’s it. Should I get an elbow brace - I don’t want to stop working out!
Thanks,
Sharon

Hi Sharon,
I think you'll likely have to see a doctor and have some tests done to diagnose this accurately so you know what you're dealing with and seek appropriate interventions. You don't want to further harm yourself. There's different treatments depending if it's bone vs ligament or tendon related. There's a lot of body weight type workouts available that are more difficult than one thinks - maybe this can fill your exercise needs until things improve?
Take care of yourself,
Jamie

Hello, Sharon. I agree with Jamie that you need to seek medical advice, but speaking from experience, I would like to tell you that I just had my second tennis elbow debridement surgery. Before committing to this 2nd invasive procedure, I tried acupuncture, chiropractic, and platelet-rich plasma therapy, all of which did nothing but cost me money, and prolong my return to Cathe. The debridement procedure is quick, and recovery is minimal. I'm 2-1/2 weeks post-op and today I did FlexTrain, with lighter weights, and without push-ups. It feels good to be back! I wish you well. Please keep us posted.

Agree with everyone above. Before proceeding, see a doctor, get radiography and make an appointment with a physical therapist. A physical therapist can show you which exercises/movements/weight etc. you can, should and should not be doing. I see resistance tubing in you near future for upper body resistance. : ) I love tubing. As you work towards healing, you'll likely add weight to the tubing.
Take good care.

I suffered from golfer's elbow a cole of years ago. Even picking up a pot in the kitchen was painful. Went to doc, got a scan, he gave me a steroid cream to fight the inflammation. He said it was an overuse injury. No weights for six weeks. Six weeks later, no issues. I did use an elbow brace for a few weeks after to help with building back up. Don't wait too long. Avoiding surgery is always a good thing if you can.

Had an issue a few months ago where I felt some twinges, put the brace back on for a few weeks but continued with the workouts and no more problems.

That is terrific that you healed so easily. :)

Well, I did go to dr, sprained elbow, she suggested an elbow brace, RICE which means no lifting, see how it is in five days - seems better but not back to normal yet. Thanks for all the comments.

My right elbow was giving me pains too. Hurt to grip ANYTHING- even a box of cereal. I ended up switching my mouse at work to a "handshake" mouse and that has helped tremendously (and cutting out lifting movements that I could feel like hammer curls, etc). I hardly feel anything now. If you are on the computer a lot that might help too.
