fruit, veggies and healthy carbs

Recently I saw a sample menu for someone who looks extremely ripped. But I noticed there was absolutely no fruit, hardly any vegtables,or anything with fiber in it, there was no wheat bread or wheat pasta. I know they are carbs and fruit contains sugar, but I think our body needs the vitamins and antioxidents that are found in fruits and veggies. My diet comes mostly from lean protein, veggies, fruit and wheat bread. I couldn't imagine NOT eating those good healthy carbs. I am extremely active and I know that I would not function well without them. I guess it all depends on what your own personal goals are....

She may look ripped, but a diet that doesn't contain fruits and veggies isn't a health promoting diet, IMO. As you say, it's lacking in vitamins and antioxidants. And she probably has to take a fiber supplement, because her diet wouldn't contain enough naturally-derived fiber.

Certainly not a healthful long-term diet. (Maybe it's a contest prep diet?)

On the other hand, wheat isn't really that great (overused in our society, highly hybridized, high in gluten), so not having wheat in ones diet isn't a bad thing. A diet with healthier grains (like quinoa) would be better.

Typically, those in professional body building competitions eliminate all fruits (with the exception of an occasional granny smith apple). They do, however, eat lots of yams or sweet potatoes instead of healthy grains. Their diets could be a ton of egg whites n (or lean protein), veggies, and sweet potatoes. I'm actually shocked to see hardly any veggies in this person's sample menu.

The idea is to die young as late as possible.

what fun is life if you are constantly training and denying your body the food it needs to live. I would rather not have a perfect body (but be healthy) and enjoy many different types of foods. And hey if that means a cookie or two well thats ok too...
