Formal wedding invite

My DH's nephew will be married on 10/10/09. The wedding is "formal" and my DH has to wear a tux. This is the kind of dress I look best in: red, stretchy, form-fitting and ruched around the midsection. Is it "formal" enough, or should I look for something more off the shoulder or longer? I don't get invited to many events, so I'm not very knowledgeable about what's appropriate. Thanks!

I don't think it's formal enough, unless you really jazz it up--maybe with a nice cover, or some definite bling. However, I'm not into fashion too much.

Love the dress though!!!:D

Nancy, what a fabulous dress! I love it!

I think it will work just fine. You need some killer pumps with it to make it really, really dressy. You will look great!

Nancy I think that dress is gorgeous! I agree with the above poster that you'll want to spice it up with your best jewelry and serious shoes :D.

I love it, and think that unless you are expected to be dressed like Cinderella going to the ball, it would be perfect. It's my favourite colour, too. Don't overdo the accessories or shoes, though; too much extra could look a little hooker-esque. Let the dress speak for itself.

I LOVE that dress!!!! Nance, that dress is stunning!! I'm like you -- I don't receive many invites to formal events so I really don't know if this qualifies, but I'd wear it!! And I agree that less is more when it comes to accessories. I'd maybe get a dazzling pair of earrings OR a necklace, but I probably wouldn't wear both.

ETA that I love your new avatar!!!

ETA again, I just did a search for formal wear on Nordstrom's site and judging by what came up, I'd say the red dress is PERFECT!!! Here are my search results. http://shop.nordstrom.com/SR?keywor...e&sort=4&viewall=0&searchorigin=KeywordSearch

Nancy,

Gorgeous dress, but not formal enough. I would go for something long and a little more ornate. You can still go for that kind of style, but if you are talking tuxes, than all bets are off for going too far over the top. Think glamour!

Nancy, I agree that the dress is gorgeous. Lucky you being able to pull it off! I'd look like a lumpy bag of flour! I'd love to see a picture of you in the dress and Mr Nancyturnippants in a tux!

I can't say I'm much into fashion either but for some reason the black V neck looks a bit more formal to me. JMHO.

I don't see the vneck option in Red. :( I don't think you need to go longer to be formal either.

I agree - you could also take two dresses and get a clue the night before what everyone else is wearing.

I agree that the dress is very nice, but no, I don't think it's formal enough. Tux won't look right with a jersey dress, IMO.
The second dress Klaudia posted is perfect, but wow, for $500+ it's a bit steep if you don't do formal events much...
I just bought a J Crew dress off of ebay. Would you try that with Nicole Miller? Here's a link to ebay with "Nicole Miller 8" as the search words. No idea what size you are, but scratch that 8 and put in your size and see what comes up...

Here's a nice purple dress found from those results (new with tags for about $100):

Hey Wendy loo! I'll snag your idea for my own search :D! Thanks for the tip on another brand of pretty dress.

Nancy, let us know what you decide.

I am afraid I agree with the posters who suggest that this dress is not quite suitable for the occasion. It is a question of the fabric, the colour and the fit/cut. It would be great to go out with the girls for a night on the town, but not to a wedding. As others have intimated by saying that you would need to be careful about how you accessorize this dress, it wouldn't take much for it to look tarty, instead of classy.

Take another look at jcrew.com. They now specialize in dresses for weddings in different fabrics (which are all classier than jersey, sorry but....), colours and fits so there should be something to fit everyone. These dresses are classy without being fussy and never scream "mother of the bride" so you don't have to worry about looking matronly.

Hope this helps,

Clare

Wow! What do people consider "formal enough"? A ball gown? I think the dress is stunning and paired with the right shoes, jewelry, and handbag you should be the ultimate FancyNancy. I think it will look gorgeous on you!

This is what I found when looking up formal wedding attire:

Beavs, I don't think we were disputing the beauty of the dress or how Nancy would look. More that the dress' fabric, etc. weren't dressy enough for a black tie wedding, especially if it's being held in NYC. I agree that whatever Nancy wears will look good cause it's the person who makes the dress, and she's a beauty:)
