I have worked in for a small rural store as a pharmacist for about 5 years now. I really love my job as a pharmacist, but for the past 6 months or so I have had much conflict at work. My boss decided about that time that he was going to show favortism (in a fatherly type of way...being 30 years my senior to age) for me...and it has caused all sorts of trouble. After having lots of smirks and gossip originate from this...I confronted my boss on at least two occasions and told him that it was hurting people that he was showing favorism.

Yesterday it came in my attention that my co-workers have been reading my personal e-mails b/c I have not logged out (I thought yahoo would log out automatically within 6 hrs of no use). Apparently the opening pharmacist opened my e-mails, and raked through all my folders with my co-workers! The addressed my boss about it, but noone told me for 48hrs what happened. Based on the info they know it's been going on for sometime.

I feel VERY violated. Anyone have similair stories?

Wow. Umm.... wow.

First... since it's personal email, there probably isn't any way you can address it from a corporate perspective. (Of course, this assumes you're part of a larger corporation and it's not just a mom-and-pop type joint.) It would be different if it was your corporate account, KWIM? You'd get outright fired for that in my company. Even managers don't have access to underlings' email unless they go through the appropriate channels.

However, it was clearly a violation of YOUR privacy, and at the very least, I would address this with the co-workers who did it. Actually, I'd be highly pissed and would use some choice words on them.

The favoritism thing seems kinda weird. Probably you should try to deflect that as much as possible.

Good luck!

Thanks for your comment. My boss has become a dear friend of mine, and it'll be so hard to 'deflect' his actions when for the most part they are just 'friendly'. I feel like I'm on egg shells, and if he says anything like, "Good job" or "What do you think about this dose?" or "Do you think this is aseptic" I have to watch how I reply... almost to the point of paranoia. I have even found myself being downright rude to my boss so others won't think I"m "feeding" on favortism.

This is a mom-and-pop type joint. About 8 adults, 5 teenagers.

Today is my normal day off, tomorrow I'm suppose to work & then have 3 days off. I'm so upset about the situation I"m prepared to take tomorrow of and demand that my boss address the situation. Any thoughts?

Melanie, maybe you should look for a job elsewhere and save your friendship with your boss and your sanity. If it's anything like around here, a pharmacist with experience can get a job in a heartbeat.

Another step would be to email everyone that is on your yahoo mail contact list or that was in your inbox to your privacy violation in case your malicious cowrkers sent emails on your behalf.

I would also change my yahoo email username.

It's time to get a new job, its sounds like you're in a toxic environment.

I am seriously considering it changing jobs. I am fortunate to be in a profession that has a 3:1 vacancy ratio. I honestly get 3 job offers weekly. I was hoping to hold off here through one more pregnancy b/c I get three months paid leave then if I doesn't get better taper myself away by dropping hours and adding hours at new store. I have lots to think about...

I apprecitae your comments, if anything it secures my thoughts...as I feel I can't trust my thoughts I right now and don't want to do anything rash. ;)

I would suggest that you go in tomorrow and address this yourself with the other workers. Dealing with conflict directly is the best way to go. That way, you can get everything out in the open, including your friendship with your boss.

If you let your boss go to bat for you on this one, it's only going to inflame the situation, since (apparently) they already think that you're his favorite anyway. That could be exactly what's driven them to this ridiculously inappropriate action.

And in my company, personal email or not, if it was accessed with company equipment, you still have grounds to discipline them. Private email or not, it's still a personal violation that's taken place in the workspace.
