? For those who drink wine for the health benefit

I have been taking health education classes in college and regarding wine/alcoholic drinks the textbooks always seem to say the following:

For women up to six drinks a week is beneficial for cardiovascular health. HOWEVER, more than three drinks a week increases the risk of breast cancer (don't hear that in the newsx( ). One nutrition book actually went so far saying that through the fermentation process all the benefits of red wine are actually lost and grape juice would be the better choice.

Do we have any chemists here who can give some input?

I used to date a chemist (an unfortunate experiment)...I works with lots of 'em so I suppose that qualifies me to say that I shamelessly enjoy a glass of wine on occasion and can attest to the benefit of making for a happier me.

Ok, seriously now.....

i find all findings on the health benefits of wine to be vague and a bit confusing. but i do know that i indulge in wine for the mental health benefits, that's for sure.

Ditto that! :)

Not a chemist here, heaven help us if I was a chemist}(

But I am just sick and tired of hearing all that conflicting information on the news. One day you should do this, the next month the same thing is a big nono!

I say, everything in moderation!

Carola,

I agree with you, thank you.

I do not deprive myself because "everything causes cancer" for goodness sakes! We hear it on the news all the time.

I just take one day at a time and know that I work hard, workout hard, and I am kind to all.

I lead a pretty darn good life, thank you! :)

I think that drinking wine for your health is a classic oxymoron. I like what Greeneyed said about the M&M's...very good point! Yes, there are antioxidants that contain health benefits but there are also a lot of bad things in there that are hurting more than helping. They contain simple carbs (m&m's and wine) and wine has alcohol...sugar and alcohol is a bad combo...as is the sugar/fat combo in m&m's....and m&m's are not said to contribute to breast cancer (that I know of).

So, if you are drinking wine for your health...you can continue to blow smoke up your own arse by telling yourself that or you can replace it with something that adds to your health without all the negatives.

Now...drinking wine for happiness, relaxation and enjoyment...that is conceivable! But for the sole purpose of your health...your doing more harm than good! Go for the clean foods out there that don't have all the conflicting reports.

I just want to add the distinction that 1 glass per day (or whatever the latest amount is) for women is supposed to provide a health benefit. However, drinking any amount of alcohol is not *recommended* as fruits, vegetables and other healthy foods are. It is included in the discretionary category of the USDA's food pyramid.

I agree with you all!

I love the wine for enjoyment.

For my health, I eat all sorts of fruit, veggies, and drink lots of water every day!
