For those of you with a day off today...

Beavs

Please take a moment to remember why you have the day off (November 12th that is) and take a moment to think of those who have served.

(and "happy Vet-trans" day to those who honor transvestite veterinarians... ;) )

>(and "happy Vet-trans" day to those who honor transvestite
>veterinarians... ;) )

LOL!! I almost forgot about them!! ;) Thanks for the reminder, Beavs. And in all seriousness, thanks for the reminder about Veterans Day too. I don't have the day off today :( but for those who do, it's important to remember why.

Thanks for posting this. I am off work today -- YAY -- and it is easy to lose sight of the reasoning behind the day off.

Many thanks to all who have served, and all who are currently serving!

i took the day off b/c i have a few appointments for my daughter. everything else is closed but i can't figure out why school isn't(i work at a school). i hope at least they can teach them a little something like they did for us when i was younger. lord knows these high school kids of mine need a lesson in what is true respect and sacrifice. to many in my school have this self serving, entitlement attitude that everyday i deal with it is like everyday i want to quit.

but i know that my family has a long line of military service including my cousin who is active duty. so i have nothing but the utmost respect for those that CHOOSE to fight for us. something a majority of our students(and folks overall) need to understand, that is wasn't to long ago when one didn't have the choice to not serve, you did it when you were called or you were arrested. so those that choose to do so deserve all the love and respect that one can give,b/c they are defending everything even that little right to not serve in the military.

Hi Guys,

Yep...off today...AND I'm a veteran (so-hard to forget that)..AAANND tomorrow is my birthday. I'm really busy!

:)

Yep I'm off today and recovering from a lock in sleep over at the roller rink with the girl scouts. The theme was red, white and blue and we all donated goodies to our troops who are not home with thier loved ones.

My boss also honored all of our veterans at work. And reminded all of us that even though we live in a free country our freedom is not free, it comes at the cost of our soldiers who our fighting everday to protect our freedom.

To all of you who are veterans, and to families of soldiers near and far Thank You all for what you do.

Happy Veterans Day!!:)

Thank you Veterans! We appreciate you more than you know.:) At the end of the day, despite all the craziness, we live in a free country because of you.:7

I'm a SAHM and my kids are off school today, so it's like I actually have to work harder than usual (except I don't have to take anyone to and from school).

I'm spending Veteran's Day thinking a lot about my stepfather; he married my mom when I was only 2 and I grew up calling him Daddy Bob. He died 2 years ago and he was a Korean War veteran. Daddy Bob was a man who told a ton of stories about his life, but hardly any about the time he spent in Korea. I miss him.

Thank you to all the vets for your sacrifices:) My family and I watched the placing of the wreath on the tomb of the unknown soldiers yesterday and just like when I hear the national anthem, I cried. We are blessed to be a free country!

A heartfelt "thank you" to all the vets out there. Many of my relatives have served in the armed forces, and one of my uncle's was killed in combat in WWII. I was privileged to attend a Memorial Day service at the American military cemetery in Holland where he is buried this past May, and it left an indelible mark on my heart. You think of your uncle as being an old guy -- my uncle was KIA at the ripe old age of 23 and I am now more than twice his age at the time of his death. I don't know why, but the realization of that really hit me.

Happy Veterans Day! I also am very grateful for all of the soldiers who give so much for our country! I may not agree with this war, but I support our wonderful soldiers!!!

A friend of mine sent an email to me last week suggesting that I send it on, so I am... She suggested that everyone send an extra Christmas card this year to:
A Recovering Soldier
c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center
6900 Georgia Avenue NW
Washington, DC
20307-5001

I thought it was a great idea...

My Dad served in the Canadian Air Force from '55 to '84 and I am grateful that he served during a long time of peace, albeit through the Cold War. The sacrifices made by those who bravely served and fought for the freedom of generations unknown to them was clearly illustrated when my beloved and British MIL showed me a picture of her high school class. She sadly noted that 19 of the carefree looking boys in that picture were killed in the war. Gave me a whole new perspective. My family shared a moment of silence and reflection at 11:00 a.m. yesterday and I am thinking of them today as well.

Take Care
Laurie

I was rather bummed to read on Snopes that such letters will not be accepted by the postal service. There were suggestions for doing something in lieu of a card however:
http://www.snopes.com/politics/christmas/soldiercards.asp

My Dad is a Korea veteran. As a reader of military history (but a tad uneducated about Korea), I was really happy when David Halberstam's Coldest Winter came out. I cannot put it down. So if you want to read a 600+ pager, most of it quite readable to average Joe or Jane, I highly recommend it.

Michele--what an honor to have been in Holland for the ceremony.

I know there are a few incredibly cool Catheites here who also happen to be veterans. ;-)

Wow that stinks about the cards. I usually consult Snopes about such things before passing them along. Sorry folks. Now I'm bummed, but I understand why they can't accept unnamed cards. Thanks for looking it up, Beavs.

If you look down the Snopes page it will tell you what you can send so thank you for bringing it up Stephanie :)

My DH (he is in the military!)will get us the info tomorrow (it is Monday night for me now,I am in Germany). There has been a policy against mail addressed to any Soldier for a few years now. He will also provide the mailing addresses for Fort Sam Houston and Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, they are the major holding hospitals for Wounded Warriors, along with Walter Reed Medical Center.
